America promised the Philippines independence after the Spanish-American War. The Philippines didn't get their independence until WWII.
America has the highest prison population in the world.
China is a one-party state and we HAVE MORE PRISONERS THAN CHINA.
You've heard that fact before and do you think anything of it?
America killed millions to expand, and is in all actuality an empire.
America performed radiation experiments on prisoners.
The American government performed nuclear testing on its people. It then paid $50,000 for every dead. That's all America thought they were worth. (with inflation that'd probably be like $100,000)
It jailed those who did not want to go to war in Vietnam.
Of course, these are mostly actions performed by the higher-up.
Still, I am tired of seeing people harping about America being the best country in the world. |

"*opinions*"
The only opinion on here was my statement that America was/is an empire. |

Why don't we just temporarily disregard our perception of which country can be considered as "Best" and focus on the general characteristics?
Every somewhat self-sufficient government in existence has positive and negative aspects that's changed throughout historical development.
A truly "Superior" country doesn't exist and never will, It's simply a matter of opportunity and circumstances involved in the perception of the individual's perceiving the country as superior. |

Well duh, if you're drafted to the military you're supposed to join or you will go jailed. That's how drafts work, you get drafted or jail. |

Because they object?
I think they should just be deported. |

Personal opinion doesn't matter when you're getting drafted. They made military service in general mandatory for men that meet a certain criteria at the time. It could be any war if they wanted. If military service is MANDATORY and you get drafted but refuse to go, you get jailed. It's basically just a matter of following the law or not. |

I don't think a draft that sends people to jail should exist in the land of the free.
"It's basically just a matter of following the law or not."
The fact that it is a law is not justification for its existence. |

America was never all that great.
I know, however, that we need independence from "Great" Britain. |

But the subject isn't about it existing. It's simple: Follow the law or face the consequences. Do I exactly support drafts? No, because there's usually enough people who volunteer and people shouldn't be forced to fight in war if they don't want to. But since the draft was a law at the time, you had to go into military service or be jailed.
The people jailed are the ones who decided not to follow the law. Don't complain about consequences. |

My argument is that the law should not exist and should never have existed in the first place, at least not in the manifestation that involves incarceration of objectors. |

An argument regarding the ethical standards of any given event that previously occurred certainly won't change the effects it had on civilization.
It's better to focus on the positive knowledge acquired from the experience than to harbor resentment towards the individuals responsible for causing the negative effects. |

well, for starters, think about which you would prefer:
rule by one, rule by the few, or rule by the many
rule by one: China, Russia, etc.
rule by the few: America
rule by the many, which is the fairest of all, is socialism
some people call it tyranny of the majority, but I would rather be tyrannized by my brothers and sisters and by myself than I would by a single man who is corrupt with power
communism and the democratic republic system don't work, socialism does |

Despite our argument I would agree that it shouldn't have been a law and not existed in the first place. But I'm just saying that people got jailed because they choose not to follow the rules set out for them. |

"...We shall never take Cuba;...but Puerto Rico, and even the Philippines, are not so sure..."
Where in that is a promise to make the Philippines independent? That war literally started because the USA wanted to take the Philippines.
"America has the highest prison population in the world."
Do you understand the words "Per capita"? It doesn't seem like you do.
"You've heard that fact before and do you think anything of it?"
No because I know what per capita means and I know the laws of the country and i see the kind of people that live here and watch them break the laws.
"America performed radiation experiments on prisoners."
If this is "bad" to you, then your knowledge of history is limited to the most privileged of times. This is equivalent to a child's playground in an apocalyptic setting if you bother to research human history at all.
"The American government performed nuclear testing on its people. It then paid $50,000 for every dead. That's all America thought they were worth. (with inflation that'd probably be like $100,000)"
I don't feel like repeating last statement.
"It jailed those who did not want to go to war in Vietnam."
Oh my god how many times would I have to repeat that statement. Even in recent history that's nothing.
"Still, I am tired of seeing people harping about America being the best country in the world."
And I am tired of seeing teenagers and children who know nothing about the history of the world other than the limited bits you learn in grade school complain about things that they don't bother doing the proper research into. Kids like you are why I'm glad I'm no longer in high school. So opinionated and supported by nothing more than a few internet links and word of mouth information. Learn what you're talking about or shut your mouth. I don't even like my country or the people living in it too much, but your arrogance in your ever-blatant ignorance is just unbelievable. Go read up US history, then go read up world history. Maybe when you're done you'll realize how absolutely uninformed you sound. Like a spoiled brat who never had to go to school or lift a finger a day in his life. Pathetic. |

what communism is: everyone is equal, and you get the supplies that you need to survive, you get medical care from who we tell you to get it from, you do this job or no job
what socialism is: everyone is equal, you get back what you put in when working, yo go to whatever doctor you want AND the gov't pays for it, you pick whatever job you want
democratic republicanism is just encouraging people to fight each other to the death over table scraps like we are some kind of animals, and our masters are the corrupt politicians that use money to get whatever they want out of the system |
