For starters, its in 1st person, some servers have the option to go third person. You don't need to shell out a dime to be good at the game, and if you are bored, you can find some of the multiple tf2 mods on servers to play. (implying you aren't already contempt with regular MVM or valve servers. In fact, you can get almost all in-game weapons by just getting them from drops, random times where the game literally hands you a weapon. Free of charge.)
TF2 isn't like your regular shooter, it isn't always shoot-to-kill. Take the Pyro for example. The stock Pyro loadout is the Fire Axe,(your typical melee)the Shotgun(pump-action,standard shotgun, good for retreating fire or when your primary is out of ammo) and the Flamethrower, a short range weapon made for hit-and-run or offensive tactics. This means you have to close to the other classes to do damage, and that is much easier said than done. Your better off flanking around targets by finding various shortcuts.
Yes,there is premium accounts that do require money to get, but it's fairly simple. Just buy a item from the ingame shop,(doesn't matter which one) with real-life cash in your Steam Account, and boom. You're a premium member. It's a one time payment for the rest of your Steam account's life. Now you can trade with other players, craft rarer items(such as the infamous hats & miscs) and occasionally find a hat or misc from drops. But if you don't even care about that, you don't have to buy it.
There's also events, 8 other classes, Co-op mode(dubbed Mann vs. Machine,or MVM) and tons of other stuff I could go over, but I'll leave the good stuff for you to experience.
TL;DR: TF2 is a unique FPS which doesn't have all shoot-to-kill classes, and doesn't need to be paid for, but has such options to possibly make it a better, more enjoyable game.
