Quarter 2 Book Review
In Anthem, a book by Ayn Rand, every aspect of a persons’ life is controlled by the government for the sake of the great WE. In the aftermath of the Great Rebirth that followed the great war of the Unmentionable Times, the world regressed to a level of technology akin to the dark ages, and all individuality has been stripped from the population.
Even the utterance of the Unspeakable Word, I, is punished by burning at the stake. Cities, the last bastions of human population, are separated by vast swaths of the Uncharted Forest, and are ruled by groups of wise men called councils. Equality 7-2521 has committed a grievous crime against the great WE, the crime of being intelligent. As punishment, he is condemned to work in the Home of the Street Sweepers. His life consists of dull tedium until he discovers an abandoned tunnel with remnants of ancient technology, and rediscovers electricity. He takes his discovery to the Council in his City, but he is branded a heretic for trying to destroy the candle industry, and the World Council’s plan. He is forced to flee the city with Liberty 5-3000, his waifu, lest he be executed. The world that Rand has created is deeply intriguing, and the philosophical implications that collectivism entails give leave to pause for thought on our own society, while still making numerous references to religious and mythical stories that help make this world more relatable, and help with Rand’s allegory of the divinity of human individuality.
Ayn Rand has created a world wherein humanity is isolated in small Cities separated by vast expanses of the Uncharted Forest, and an oppressive bureaucracy reigns. This future that Rand has created is terrifying yet deeply intriguing to the reader.”You shall do what the Council of Vocations shall prescribe you. For the Council of Vocations knows in it’s great wisdom where you are needed by your brother men, better than you can know it in your unworthy little minds.”(Page 22) In the world of Anthem, the bureaucracy decides the fate of every being living within the confines of the city. This provides stark contrast to modern society in developed countries,, where we are told from a young age that we can be whatever it is we set out mind to be. “We must never speak of the times before the Great Rebirth...it is only the Old Ones who whisper about in in the evenings in the Home of the Useless. They whisper many strange things, of towers which rose to the sky, in those Unmentionable Times, and of the Wagons which moved without horses and the lights which burned without flame.” (Page 19) This excerpt illustrates the far removal of this future society from ours, but also reveals another similarity. The great WE places little value in those that are past an age of usefulness, as our society does as well, placing our elderly in similar “homes”. This world of Rand’s is so intriguing to the reader since our societies are similar in some ways, but very different in many others. The world Rand created is also the stage for philosophical exploration of human society.
In Rand’s future, society has evolved into a socialistic “utopia” in which men are all made to be equal and collectivism is the law of the land, but this society also suffers from that same evolution. “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words that no others think and to put them down upon a paper that no others are to see. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone.” (Page 17) No man is his own, and all thoughts and deeds must be with and for the good of the great WE that pervades society in this dark future Rand sees for humanity. No man can have personal thoughts or feelings, nor can any great thinker arise to improve the squalid life of humanity that results from arbitrary limitations put in place by their fellow man. ”We learned that the earth is flat and that the sun revolves around it, which causes the day and the night. We learned the names of all the winds which blow over the seas and push the sails of our great ships. We learned how to bleed men to cure them of all ailments.”(Page 22). This passage reflects a good deal of real world social structures, as in many oppressive societies in our world today, the populace is fed a propaganda infused “truth”. These striking parallels to our own world make a future controlled by pseudo-socialism not only a chilling idea, but a disconcerting possibility. This paints a frightening picture of a future in which collectivism rules unhindered by free thought and innovation. These philosophical revelations are pervaded by references to familiar sources that make the world more relatable and her message more clear.
Rand’s world is full of references to the religion and classic mythology that serve to connect the reader to the world and make apparent Rand’s claim the individuality is sacrosanct. “And now I see the face of god, and I raise this god over the earth, this god that men have sought since men came into being, this god who will grant them joy and peace and pride. This god, this one word: ‘I’” (Page 97) Here, Equality-7 2521 is attesting to the power of individuality, stating that this word “I” is the greatest power in the world. Rand’s claims of the divinity of man’s self is a stark contrast to the divinity of the great WE preached by the bureaucracy of the cities. “He took the light of the gods and he brought it to men, and he taught men to be gods...His name was Prometheus. ‘It shall be your name’, said the Golden One’ ‘And I have read of a goddess… who was the mother of all the gods. Let this be your name...for you are to be the mother of a new kind of gods.” In this moment, Prometheus names himself the bearer of light, and his wife the mother of the gods. This allusion to classical mythology make Rand’s world even more relatable and the divine nature of individuality even more apparent.
Rand created an intriguing world in Anthem that is the stage for her philosophical exploration of human society. This thought-provoking future is rife with allusions to classical mythology that serve to prove Rand’s point that human individuality is sacred. Anthem is a tale that warns of the dangers of collectivism, and cautions against abandoning that which makes us each unique, ego.
