electronic music is so stale now. either you make bigroom, terror squad, trap, or you are 14 years behind. i have given up on it to move to greener territory.
i've been getting into metal recently, mostly melodeath. i like melodeath because it's heavy enough to not bore me, but it's also light enough that it doesn't sound like abrasive noise designed to annoy your ears. it's also got a ton of variety, there's so many bands that i wouldn't have known even are melodeath unless i was told (like soilwork).
in flames is my favorite band by far. i love all their albums after (and including) clayman, yes even soundtrack to your escape (it's so addicting) and siren charms (it has really grown on me). my favorite album is come clarity, followed up by reroute to remain and a sense of purpose. my favorite songs (in order) are reflect the storm, trigger, and only for the weak. no, i can't get into their pre-clayman albums. i've tried multiple times, i just don't like it.
two other bands i have checked out extensively and liked are arch enemy and soilwork. i heard a few songs from amon amarth and insomnium, both were pretty decent. spotify has been repeatedly spamming me with "you should listen to trivium", but i don't really like them.
can anyone give any advice for other bands or songs to check? i don't want the excessively harsh stuff, there's a reason why i don't go heavier than melodeath. |

| Pretty sure Clayman and earlier are In Flames' Melodeath albums, and most of their stuff from then onward is Groove Metal or Alt Rock. |

for some non-melodeath, try some thrash it makes for a good transition between lighter stuff and extreme metal |

thanks for all the recommendations, i'll try to listen to as many as i can. just keep in mind that if you don't give specific recommendations, i use spotify's top 5 or 10 list.
so far:
wintersun: that was good. i'm usually not a fan of the progressive style of music, but their songs just are so good.
amorphis: either spotify top songs gravitate to their lighter songs, or they're a pretty light band. it's pretty decent.
children of bodom: "are you dead yet" was good, their other songs feel as if they are either too screamish or i just simply don't like the guitars (too high-pitched). that specific song was good because it felt... melodic. sorry, can't find a better word to describe it, it just felt like an overall good song that didn't need screaming or high-pitched guitar solos to prove that it's good.
insomnium: more of the same, not like that's a bad thing though. good background music.
"Pretty sure Clayman and earlier are In Flames' Melodeath albums, and most of their stuff from then onward is Groove Metal or Alt Rock."
makes sense, it definitely didn't sound like melodeath even though everyone was saying it was. alt rock does not sound like an accurate description though, it's a broad term associated with a very light or indie sound most of the time, and only one song they have can be classified as that (through oblivion). |

@Over
Wintersun is perfect. Yes, Amorphis is a light band indeed, but they're perfect too. And everything before AYDY is more melodic than that. I guess CoB just became thrashier with time. And the best description for the new IF would be Alt Metal... |

I would definitely recommend Alterbeast

The Devil Wears Prada and Bring me the horizon are metal. BMTH's older songs are metal. There new album is more Nu metal than they're original albums which were on the side of death metal.
The devil wears prada is metal too. I wont clarify there genre. Five finger death punch does has some "metal" songs. Slipknot is chickensh!t and pierce the veil is for emo pricks. |

@Zokul
You don't like them, but it does not change the fact that they're metal (well except PTV).
I don't like them myself but I have give them that.
Slipknot* = Nu Metal / Heavy Metal Pierce The Veil = Experimental Hardcore The Devil Wears Prada = Melodic Metalcore Bring me the horizon = Metalcore / Deathcore Five finger death punch = Hard Rock / Heavy Metal / Groove Metal |
