Note: Buddhism is an atheistic religion. Buddhists don't worship Buddha, we was just the founder of the religion. Buddhists don't believe in reincarnation either.
1. Buddhism is based on the Four Nobel Truths being:
a. Suffering is a natural part of life, so accept pain as part of life. It's not personal, it doesn't necessarily mean it's because you did something bad. It's just part of life. This is a common bond we all share.
b. Suffering is caused by craving, ignorance and aversion, known as the three poisons. Craving can be anything we want or don't want. We crave to get more wealth, to get more sleep, to be more beautiful, to have life stability, whatever it may be, we all crave things or crave to get rid of things (aversion). Ignorance causes craving and aversion. Ignorance "isn't just an inability to apprehend the truth but an active misapprehension of the status of oneself and all other objects".
c. Getting rid of suffering can be done by, not altering your current state to a new one which satisfies your cravings, but modifying and eventually doing away with your cravings. As Elsa put it, "Let it go." We constantly crave things and this causes us to suffer, but if learn to not crave things, we can learn to be truly happy and end suffering.
d. Learning to not crave things can be accomplished through the Nobel 8-fold Path, as it's called.
2. The Nobel 8-fold Path to end your suffering is simply to control the specific 8-aspects of our life in order to avoid inflicting suffering on others and to avoid causing suffering to ourselves by ridding ourselves of cravings. True happiness is achieved through this personal endeavor. The eight aspects are: a. Right view b. Right intention c. Right speech d. Right action e. Right livelihood f. Right effort g. Right mindfulness h. Right concentration
3. Buddhists follow the 5 Precepts, which are just some basic ethics in Buddhism. These precepts are: a. Avoid harming other living things. b. Avoid stealing. c. Avoid [ Contend Deleted ] misconduct. d. Avoid lying. e. Avoid losing mindfulness (like intoxication).
4. Buddhist monks, the people who dress in orange robes, are part of an old version of Buddhism called Buddhist monasticism. Buddhists don't need to dress in those clothes, but these monks who do spend their lives trying to reach enlightenment and teaching others about Buddha's teachings.
5. If you are a monk, you must avoid five types of businesses: a. Weapons. b. Humans (slavery). c. Meat. d. Intoxicants. e. Poison.
6. Karma is just the law of cause and effect. It's just a natural law. There's no divine being judging our actions, so if we want good things to happen to us, we need to plant those seeds for it to happen. This is what karma is. If we want people to treat us nicely, we have to treat them nicely first. If we treat them badly, we'll be treated badly back. Some may view karma in a supernatural sense, but that's not really what it means. It's more of a "you reap what you sow", or "what goes around, comes around" type of thing.
7. The goal of Buddhism is to reach enlightenment like Buddha. This is when you let go of all your cravings that cause suffering and reach true happiness. Most people in Buddhism don't really reach this, it's something you probably have to dedicate your life to, like a Buddhist monk. But, even so, you can still make yourself happier by gaining some enlightenment through the teachings.
I'm not a Buddhist but I think the stuff Buddha's said is interesting and I could see why people like this guy.
I just thought I'd summarize it for you Laymen. |
