@ d4 It all depends on where you download it from if it downloads only the rom in a zip file, it's probably safe
if it's an exe that asks to disable firewall to "install the rom" that already holds up red flags that it's a virus

My brother won't listen. He's downloaded many fake mods for Minecraft from bad repped sites. He STILL disables firewall because "the website's trustworthy" without doing research. He got many viruses on my parents computer, my OLD computer, and many others for trying to download hacks for the Playstation 3.
He. Doesn't. Listen. |

at this point, your brother is too dumb to use technology properly he should probably be grounded from everything technology related until someone talks sense into him that those sites aren't trustworthy and will give him viruses and he finally learns
Please throw out yourselves |

@skater Tell him to NEVER EVER download mods from ANY site that is not linked from an offical Curseforge site or the Minecraft Forums or the modders offical site. Because A) viruses B) sometimes it gives you an adverisementfly link which supports the modder Tell him if you don't know this, just stick with launchers like FTB or Technic or ATL.

Find a way to disable downloads, or start restricting the computer, and teach the idiot how to tell what is safe and what isn't! Honestly, is this kid mentally disabled?! You would think you would learn the FIFTH TIME! Well, try to teach the kid. A ROM shouldn't come in an exe, zip or sometimes, depending on the site, it may let you get the ROM directly. Try not to use any special installers, e.g. Coolrom's downloader, which is a piece of crap and is unneeded, but Coolrom is the best site. If it asks you to disable the firewall, it is crap. Also, I would suggest malwarebytes, keep running the trial, run a scan every once in a while, it will probably catch just about anything, I know my AV (Trend Micro) has saved me repeatedly (Not my fault, redirects can get ya, you know?). Malwarebytes is an amazing scanner, and free, so go for that it will clear most of the damage, but you might want to use it to identify it and delete most of it, and you manually hunt down the rest, generally good. Also MB doesn't tend to delete random crap it installs if it isn't malicious, just crapware. Good luck, and maybe restrict the computer a little bit or watch him.

trojans are the absolute worst
no virus or adware can compare to those godawfully evil malwares those things are horrible
use control pannel to uninstall everything recent, use windows start menu to search "view running processes" so you can disable anything suspicious, try to save your computer i wish you luck |

Trust me I try.
Chances are there's a trojan on here already.
He uses the excuse: There's lots of viruses on this thing, might as well not care. |

i use .ROM files, but if and only if it's actually a .ROM and not a .EXE
the only way i will ever agree to download something is if when I right click and use Save Link As, it is the file i'm looking for and not a .html redirect page
i don't left click when i'm installing any files |

If he's trying to download a rom, use good websites like emuparidise, coolrom, and theisozone. Coolrom recently pulled all Nintendo roms so I shouldn't use that one alot. |

I once had a trojan that: 1. Lasted for NINE MONTHS, a special MB scanner saved me from the last little portion, and I won't forget the random XFinity alert that kept popping up telling me there was suspicious activity coming from my computer, which I had assumed was a fake virus, but it turned out it was real because it told me what it thought it was, and it was correct in thinking it. I ran the scan, and found the last .dll for it, it had looked legit to me, should've known. 2. Redirected me when I clicked on google search results to pages of similar content, but filled with trojans and other crap. My AV blocked most of the sites, but occasionally one got through, one time I was looking for a screen recorder, and when I clicked on one of the links, it took me to a fake site for one and I almost downloaded it. 3. Downloaded tons of other viruses and other crap, all trojans, all generic, all nasty. My AV is still the best no matter what, it saved me so many times. The amount that it got was insane. 4. Tried to hijack all of my browsers, but that is pretty common, and now google chrome and its extensions are one of my main methods of tracking viruses, but generally hijackers tend to just change some settings to malicious search pages and other crap, they tend to be benign other than that, but still, they keep reverting it. This was different. This never seemed to completely install itself. It kept detecting it and deleting it, and this was how I started learning a lot of my virus stuff, I started doing it manually. Once it got into my browser, after I deleted it, most of the effects were gone.
Also, I still remember what it was called. Check out it was: Js.Medfos.b. The thing made it for NINE FREAKING MONTHS

here's an example
you are on a website looking for an Application, let's say you're downloading Audacity (just an example of a program)
you see a lot of buttons on the page that say "Download" but you're not sure which ones are advertisements, and which ones are the right thing
right click the download button, and select something along the lines of "Save link as"
it will let you select where to put the file, and it will show the name of the file. if it's something like "audacityinstaller.exe", then that's probably the right thing.
if it's something like "download.htm", and saves as a chrome document, that's because that they want you to Left Click the download button. if you absolutely trust it, then left click it, and if it auto-starts a download, consider right clicking the download and Canceling it. if another download button appears on the redirected page, do the left click > save link as again, and if it's not what you're looking for, it's bad.
if it's something like "stuh9oethj.exe" or something unrelated, it's obviously an adware |

Again skater, download Malwarebytes, run a scan, they are one of the best scanners, but again, if you can, get a paid subscription to one so you have it block malicious files without a scan.
