It is very underrated. I don not understand the hate that it's getting by critics. Though, Cole is no stranger to critics totally overlooking his music because they think he's too repetitive. But after these same critics go and praise Eminem who still talks about the issues with his mom and Kim. No hate on Eminem, but J. Cole shouldn't get hate if Eminem is going to be praised for the same thing.
Anyway, 2014 Forest Hills Drive is actually impressive, do to the fact that only ONE twitter avi change made people across the globe so excited for this new album. The fan's seem to enjoy, I enjoy it very much. It is not like Born Sinner for me though, Born Sinner was an amazing project for me, the topics that Cole touched were different from what other rappers were doing at the time and the way he spit over them was surprising because when most rappers try to touch these topics they fail miserably, but Cole succeeded at making the situations feel relatable.
This album has some MINOR flaws, the song Hello is the 10th track on this album and it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album for me. I find the beat a little too bland and filled with your same trap music-isms. And sometimes J. Cole goes a little off topic in songs, but in no way does these things affect the entire album. The album is a great, definitely in the Top 10 of this year. |

I agree, Born Sinner was underrated by many critics as well I think the tracklist was strong, but I think the order could've been altered a bit the make the album come together better I liked Hello though
With Born Sinner they said he was more focused on lyricism than lyrical insight, which I disagree on for the most part. Villuminati received hate for some of that too. The production of the album was great too, gomd had a unique sound near the beginning and role modelz might be the most well produced imo. He handled most of it himself again
It wasn't nominated for a Grammy so it'll be a contender for the 2016 Grammys. Definitely in the top 3 best rap albums released this year. |
