Theories behind Terra’s petrification, return, and her going into high school

Prelude Question: Was that Terra?

Answer: Unless she was a clone that indeed was Terra. And whether or not it was a clone, Terra’s petrification has worn off and she is alive. When Beast Boy investigated her final resting place, the statue that was once her was gone. I also noticed another detail. At the end of Season 2, Starfire placed a group of flowers at Terra’s feet. When Beast Boy investigated the resting place, the now withered flowers had been knocked off their original place, possibly by a no longer petrified Terra trying to get her bearings.

Petrification:

Theory One, natural petrification:
They always state that Terra’s stone form came from her stopping the lava. I believe that it has something to do with it directly or even indirectly.
Theory one states that her petrification came from the lava doing something to her. In real life, organisms can be petrified under intense heat and pressure as shown in the ruins of Pompeii and with petrified trees. However, the lava is shown to have cooled away from Terra along the walls of the base. This suggests that there might have been the heat required to do it but not the pressure. Besides, such a method of preservation is quite unwise and fatal; there mostly likely would not be a way to revert the process.

Theory two, over-exertion and threatening presence:
Even from the beginning, we knew that Terra’s geo-kinetic powers were highly volatile. With power like that, there is always a frontier to push, if you can reach it that is. One theory I have had of Terra and Geo-Force’s (her brother) powers are this; virtually all rocks are made of minerals, so these two technically are wielding clumps of minerals. Ice is a mineral; so if they really wield minerals, does that mean they can wield ice?
When Terra used her power to stop the volcano, she kicked her powers into high gear unlike ever before. The countering presence of a fully awakened volcano with her overreach probably triggered something in her power, something even Slade could not comprehend or foresee; a defense mechanism of sorts that turned her into her mastered element, albeit temporarily, until the effect gradually wore off, well after the volcano had been silenced.

Theory three, Trigonic temple:
As we know from Season 4, there was a temple beneath the city’s old library dedicated to the inter-dimensional demon Trigon and the coming of the gem (the titan Raven) which would bring him onto this plane. Cyborg said the temple was older than the city, which could place it date of origin virtually anywhere between 1492 and the first humans. The temple had many passages which the Titans did not explore and thus could go anywhere. If the temple was built when the area that is now Jump City was just wilderness, its builders had plenty of elbow room to put whatever they desired.

Theory three (my personal theory) states that Slade, knowingly or not, constructed his second base not just on a dormant volcano but also on an offshoot area of the temple of Scath.

There are three reasons I think it is this:

One, the “windows” of Slade’s base is curiously ornate in a dark cathedral sort of way. Slade’s first base was filled with active gears, like he was in a factory or a clock-tower; if those gears were not installed there by Slade for decoration (unlikely) or for some more professional purpose (likely), than that would mean that the gears were already there. Likewise, I doubt Slade would go through the trouble of installing something like those windows without a severe reason or purpose (and nothing seems to come to mind up front besides giving the place (a cave) a darker tone); (Because everything he does is for a severe reason or purpose (Like how Terra’s suit was more than a fashion statement)) thus that means they were already there thanks to someone else. Although they do not exactly fit the fashion statement of the rest of the temple, they certainly seem like something the servants of Trigon would install.

Reason two: the base is underground like the rest of the temple.

Reason three: there were steel beams all over the base and although Jump City is on California’s coast (Which has a decent reputation for seismic activity) if Slade’s base was carved out of solid rock recently, there probably would not have been enough seismic activity to make the steel beams a necessity. However, if it was part of a century or even millennia old temple, there would have been enough seismic activity to warp the chamber, making the beams necessary and perhaps on the side, cause the passageway which linked the chamber to the rest of the temple to collapse (Something that might have been further sealed by Terra splattering lava everywhere).

In accordance with this theory, when Terra unleashed her power on the rising volcano, she truly stirred up the place; it could quite possibly have disturbed something there: runes, an artifact, ghosts, or something else with enough of Trigon’s power to petrify her. (Note: when Trigon was imprisoned, he still had the power to make himself known on the mortal plane, even as far as Tamaran, enough to awe a group of followers enough to make a complex temple for him and he had the power to fill it with his minions as well as send Slade and even more minions to capture Raven. In his imprisonment, he also had the power to destroy Raven’s home, Azarath, which was considered to be the closest thing to a challenge for him. When he emerged, in a matter of seconds he petrified over seven billion people and threw the earth back into the Hadean Eon (The first stage of Earth’s existence: named because it was believed to truly look like hell then. Like Mustafar from Star Wars.). In a matter of hours, he had recovered enough strength to begin conquering the universe. So for the record, the amount of power it would have taken to petrify Terra would have been a drop out of the ocean when it comes to Trigon.) Thus, like a disturbed snake, this object struck at the source of the commotion, Terra and petrified her, fortunately after she had nullified the volcano or at least minimalized the threat.

Terra’s Return

Theory One, natural petrification: As stated earlier, natural petrification is something that is not exactly reversible by nature; thus this theory is not applicable.

Theory Two, defense mechanism:
Starfire’s theory about Terra’s return (See the comic Teen Titans Go #51 Metamorphosis) is that her stone state shed of off her like a cocoon (Whether or not it resulted in her alleged amnesia and loss of powers is unknown but a possibility (if the two actually were present)).
In accordance with the defense mechanism theory, Terra’s powers turned her to stone to protect her until the great threat (the volcano) was neutralized. Sooner or later, between Aftershock Part II and Things Change, her power acknowledged that the threat was no more and the petrification effect wore off.

Theory Three, Trigon’s defeat:
When Trigon entered the world, he turned everyone, save the titans, to stone, a state synonymous with that of Terra’s. When Raven defeated her father and renewed his prison, everyone he has changed was changed back to normal. What are the odds that it brought back Terra on the side? I would say very high if Trigon’s powers were what got her petrified in the first place. If Slade’s second base was built on a branch of the temple of Scath, then it is possible that Trigon’s powers are what petrified her. If Trigon’s power was what petrified her, than Raven’s countering powers could very well be what brought her back.

How did she end up in a High School in Jump City?

How Terra (if it is her) wound up at Murakami High School is a matter of factors, not theories. These factors are intertwined with each other.

In the episode, “Things Change” Beast Boy finds a girl enrolled at Murakami High School who appears and talks just like Terra. When approached, she says she is not the person he thinks she is. However, the information given by this girl does not provide an adequate background for her. Her alternate name, home, and method of being in school are all not present; even someone with amnesia or a friend of that person would notice something being wrong. If it was the real deal, why and how, of all places, did Terra end up in a High School in Jump City?

Factor 1, armor:
Terra’s armor is the big question that tantalizes me. According to Slade, the armor Terra had in Aftershock Parts I and II was grafted to her skin and nervous system and thus quite impossible to remove, at least if attempted on like normal armor. When Terra’s petrification was somehow ended, one of the first things she might have tried to do is remove that armor. (Another hole in Terra’s amnesia theory, if waking up in a cave with armor stuck to your skin does not bring back some kind of memory; I do not know what will.) If there was anyone who could remove her armor, it would have to be someone tech-savvy.

One suspect is Professor Chang who might have been the person who made the armor in the first place considering he is already the source of Slade’s commandos and who knows what else. If Terra did not force him up front to remove the armor, she probably rummaged through his cache of goodies and found the blueprints if they were there. Chang is kind of like the Penguin of the Teen Titans community; a criminal and underworld dealer with a business sense. If Chang knew that Terra was at large again, he would probably put a price tag on that information. (Like it mattered to Slade, knowing how much of an all-seeing nut he is) If he did or did not know, odds were at the time he was too busy working for the Brotherhood of Evil to bother with Terra or the Titans who were currently out of Jump City fighting the Brotherhood.

My next best guess is the Batman; the master detective and crime-fighter who could probably take off Terra’s armor in his sleep. When Terra was freed, she probably fled as far as she could from Jump City out of shame, and maybe wound up in Gotham. There, it would not have been too hard to come across Batman. Being more all-knowing than even Slade, Batman would have definitely known who the girl before her was and what she did, both in conquering the city and saving it. Knowing she died a hero, Batman might have taken her to the cave, under tranquilizer or not, and removed her armor. When she revived, Terra and Batman would have then discussed events and what Terra wanted to do now.

Factor Two, how she got into the school:

The “Terra” from Things Change never revealed her home or how she was allowed to be in this school. If it was Terra, it meant that she was there as an orphan or a former orphan, otherwise, it meant stealing money for the bills, which was probably something she was trying to get above right now.

If treated like a former orphan, it means she, after having the armor removed, wandered the streets of Jump City and was happened across by an orphanage, taken in, and soon adopted by unknown foster parents. Before the Titans returned, she became enrolled in Murakami High School, made friends with Dionne and Amber, and altogether left her complicated past behind.

If she was like an up and front orphan, than that would mean she was in a school with a branch for orphans. Whether in Jump City or Gotham, all cities have some kind of problem. Therefore, it would not be surprising if Jump City had its own orphan population. If Terra got her armor off thanks to Batman, Terra might have said to him that she does not want to be the villain anymore, but could not bear to go back to the Titans or her kin in Markovia after what she did. She hoped she could somehow live a normal life. Batman respected that stance and offered her an option; an orphanage in Jump City with a branch funded by Wayne Enterprises that would fund tuition fees for orphans who wanted to do high school. Although conflicted about returning to Jump City, Terra could not see a better option herself.

Batman would have proposed this option because he wanted Terra to face her fears rather than flee from them like she usually did. He wanted Terra to see that the Titans have already forgiven her despite what she tells herself. And when the day comes that the Titans know of her current situation, she will have the courage to face what she fears and explain why she trying to live a normal life. He may or may not have expected her to pull an amnesia stunt, but in the aftermath of the final episode, although she is sad about seeing Beast Boy again, she has only become more comfortable and happy in her new life, as Geo-Force seemed to notice. The more and more she saw old friends and family respect her decision, the more at ease she was with her new path.
Food for thought: Being Terra’s new close friends, do Dionne and Amber know of Terra’s big secret of her past life? And if they did not, how would they react if they did?

Factor three, what keeps her there:

If the girl at the school was indeed Terra, what keeps her there? What would she lose there if she left? What has she always wanted?

Even as a princess in Markovia, Terra was conflicted about whom she was and what she was meant to be. Before she got her powers in an experiment, Terra always had trouble fitting in a princess. After she got her powers, her poor control over them forced her to run away so that she would not harm anyone. When Terra left though, she left her only family behind. Afterwards, she travelled the world, trying to use her powers for good, but her poor mastery of her powers only made bad situations worse, and so she fled the areas of her mistakes fearing rejection. She ultimately came to the Teen Titans, (Though Slade had been watching her for some time before then) and they took her in like a family. Despite their obvious hospitality, Terra remained vague on her past out of fear that they would reject her like all other people she has come across. When approached by Slade, she learns that he is the only other person who truly knows of Terra’s past as a failed, overpowered hero. Slade offers Terra his help in exchange for her loyalty to him. Terra was conflicted if not dumbfounded; here was a man the Titans call evil and yet, despite him knowing everything about her, he still wants to help her and be family to her as masters or sensei get. This goes against what she thinks of him initially and makes her question the Titans. Slade eggs those feelings on by saying if the Titans knew the truth behind her travels; they would reject her like all the other people she met.
Point is: Terra desired to be accepted, to have friends and family who trust her and whom she can trust in turn. Ironically, she leaves one family in Markovia, betrays another, knocks a third into a pit of lava, and now lives going about with two friends who may or may not know her past. However, that last group is perhaps what binds Terra more than all other things to her new life; and will continue to hold her to a normal life until something or someone forces Terra to leave them behind too.

Ever since she left Markovia, Terra had been running. Even when she found a home in the Titans twice she hid her secrets from them. Terra always ran usually because there was something pushing her along. Sometimes fear, sometimes hatred, sometimes grief, regret, or sadness. Although she is now living a normal high school life, Terra in a way is still running. Despite the fact that the life she is now in is a good one. Terra still cannot face her current fear; will the Titans forgive her or reject her for what she did? At least in her current life, Terra can live away from that fear, away from the pushing and running that has summed up her life before her petrification.

In Things Change, Beast Boy wonders why Terra would not return to a life where she seemed so happy. Beast Boy does not realize, however, that Terra is happier in that high school than anywhere else she has been. When a princess in Markovia, Terra was always conflicted about whom she was. When on the run and when she was first with the Titans, she could barely hide the shame inside her of her past mistakes and that she was hiding the truth from the Titans. After training with Slade and returning to the Titans, the time where BB thought she was truly happy, she became more conflicted with each passing day at the thought of betraying the Titans. And after the petrification and the betrayal and her new life; in the high school Terra has found happiness, only truly feeling the pangs of her past when the past, like BB, caught up with her. Like Slade said to BB, Slade was not the one hurting her because BB, not Slade, has come to her as a representative of a troubled past she would almost wish she had amnesia concerning. It was for that reason that Slade intervened to discourage Beast Boy from trying to bring her back to the Titans. Slade knew he could no longer treat Terra as an apprentice and he would not have someone of her caliber back in the Titans. Slade probably knew that Terra had found contentment in normalcy and, as surprising as it sounds, he respected that decision. She is not a villain, but at least not a hero either. (Besides, an assassination job by Slade on a seemingly neutral person would be nothing short of suspicious and unnecessary)
