I know some will say that this is in the DO NOT SUGGEST sticky, but this is different from simply changing a username. This is a completely different process and it deserves at the very least to be considered.

The point of this thread will be to argue allowing for old, extensively inactive usernames to be recycled, and thus enjoyed by active members of the Roblox community.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the things that I think is really interesting and awesome about one of my favorite games, World of Warcraft, was the ability to recycle old player names if the account remained inactive for an extended period of time.

And by extended period of time, I mean a few things:

1. The username associated with the specific character that someone wanted had to have not been online for at least half a year.

2. Not only did the specific character have to be offline, but the entire account itself had to have all characters offline for about half a year (the reason for this was that if I didn't use a character as an alt, but still played WoW and contributed to the WoW community in some way, they wouldn't take away my old character's name that I might play, even if it was level 1, with no quests completed, etc.)

So what I am proposing is for ROBLOX to allow usernames to be recycled under a certain, strict condition. This conditions is similar to the World of Warcraft name reclamation policy. Here is the condition that I propose:
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1) The user, as well as all users associated with that validated email have to be offline for more than one year. (If no e-mail is associated with a username, then only that username is to be considered for being offline, as no others can be traced.)

(Optional. I don't know if this is possible, or if it is, should be used as a check) The IP address associated with an account should be inactive on ROBLOX for more than a year. If an IP address associated with an old account continues to be active on another account, even though no common email is linking them, the name cannot be freed. This is for players that have an old username that they own, but do not want to associate their emails with ROBLOX.

It goes without saying that a username that posses any form of Builder's Club should not be subject to name recycling. This is because even though the account is not active, a person in real life paid currency for a certain amount of allotted time, and still receives stipends, etc. In other words, an account with lifetime BC/TBC/OBC can't ever be renamed.

The username who has its name recycled will not actually be deleted. He/she will have his/her name changed to a standard template name decided upon by ROBLOX. (That has a string of numbers or something after it. For example, RobloxUser10142 or something of the sort.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Evidence:

This has been used in many online games as a tribute to the community (World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and more). Players can and should be allowed to claim usernames that are not involved in any way with ROBLOX community anymore, that they have been inactive for a vast period of time. Players should be able to identify themselves in a username that they enjoy the most, without infringing on other users, or the terms of service. This old, stagnant, username recycling policy that I am suggesting will take care of this. Want to be called "Kyle" instead of "Kyle031652"? Petition to have a name recycled. If that username and all accounts associated with it have been offline for more than a year, it may be freed up. Then, you must either pay the $1000 Roblox fee for renaming OR create an entirely new account.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Analysis:

Pros)

1. Players will be ecstatic to possess a name that they enjoy more, thus boosting the ROBLOX community.

2. Users will identify with their characters more, and will in turn be more likely to play ROBLOX where they feel at home. Think about it. If I had the username "Jake", instead of "Jake0128", I would feel pretty awesome and unique walking around in games. Attaching this necessary, but unwanted string of numbers at the end of my name diminishes my feeling as a unique ROBLOX person (Prison serial number, anyone? haha)

3. The massive amount of name rechanging and new accounts created might actually prove to be a substantial revenue boost for ROBLOX. All those people paying up $1000 to have their mains switching over to new, fresh identites will be a monumental currency sink. Many people will probably buy some form of Builder's Club to go along with their new identity as well!

Cons)

1. Though it is unlikely, a user that comes back after one year to find their name changed to RobloxUser10142 or something of the sort due to someone claiming their inactive name may be pretty upset. However, a span of 1 year is completely enough time to determine that they were very inactive, and is in my view, quite justifiable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In my final analysis, I believe the pros do outweigh the cons, and if this was implemented, would be one of the most fresh, exciting, and much needed changes to take place in the ROBLOX community in a while.

Not reading it all But I remember I use to be on this other website and they got rid of all the old user names. They had 500,000 Users. Not 73 Million like roblox which is a big difference. They managed it without any problems but how the heck can roblox do this? How do they know if someone wont come back to an inactive acc?

This will cause many problems for roblox. Also I don't spend robux changing my names even though I do have 50k. Waste of robux.

So I don't know If I should support or not.

I think it is justifiable though that if a username is inactive for over a year, they aren't really a member of the ROBLOX community anymore. That name is now wasted space that an active member could be enjoying and using to the fullest.

Obviously the price would still be $1000 robux. If someone REALLY wanted to change their name and be unique, I think it would be 1000 robux well spent. Not wasted.

Also, ROBLOX could find a way to automate this, possibly. It wouldn't necessarily consume time with all their support staff.

@Tenako

Sure you can come back after five years, just your username will now belong to a member that uses it effectively, and contributes to the community.

In many games that I have mentioned, including WoW, people understand the importance of the good identity that is your username. They understand that old names of people shouldn't remain their property indefinitely if they leave the community for an excessive amount of time.

Bottom line: Why should you maintain strict property of a username in a game that has high demand (with paying customers, mind you) that want these names, when you don't even play the game yourself anymore?

Great idea! I love it! Like I wanted my name to be, "LazyLemon," (no 111), but it was taken by a 09'er, and if this feature was implemented into the game, it would not only help me, but the WHOLE ROBLOX community.

I find no reason to support this.
It is no big deal that:
I want crowfighter but ders already crowfighter!!1

I suggest that this will only apply to non-verified accounts. Non-verified accounts might be acc that are used for spam or other illegal purposes.

Verified acc have already proven their commitment to be a part of the community.

I know that this idea has good intention, but I think that just because you have been inactive for more than a year separates you from the community.

@crowfighter

I know many people who would give a ton to have a username such as Jake, Kyle, Stan, etc. Myself included. So for them, it kind of is a big deal. They want to have a unique and cool identity to go along with their character.

Is a verified account still really part of a community when they have not been active for over a year? In name only, really. Do a quick search of "Jake" for users in the search bar, and tell me how many of those, honestly, you think contribute to the growing ROBLOX community.

Even verified accounts. Just because an account is verified or not doesn't mean they should have an indefinite claim to a username on ROBLOX, when they don't even use the website. The label of "verified", I'm pretty sure has very little to do with community involvement and more of a security feature of the ROBLOX web site.

Having numbers at the end of username isn't a big deal.

Yes, it reduces uniqueness. BUt does that matter? No. It's not a big thing.

In a webstite where they give you a platform to develop games and the ability to play other user-generated games, it does not matter.

Usernames aren't a big deal at all in terms of game creation.

Example:
daxter33

This does not affect user experience at all.

While game creation is an important part of ROBLOX, I disagree that that's all there is to it. I think you are underestimating the importance of a user's identity, and how they fit in on ROBLOX. Hats are a big thing on ROBLOX. People want to have really awesome avatars. Ask anyone. It then should follow that names should be a big deal. It comes down to that identity of the person.
We can agree to disagree, but I think at the end of the day it still would be sort of a big deal if you ask around. Ask people, "Would you want to have a username with just your first name?". I think for the vast majority, they would say yes.

So you want your first name to be your username. Ah ok I get it.

But there is no guarantee that that "Jake" guy is inactive.

This seems to me as a personal rant.

1 year is too short. There is ALWAYS a probability that "Jake" will come back and play again. And is it justifiable that he will have his first name taken away from him just because he was inactive? NO!

Jake^^^

He last logged in in 2006. Yes, he's inactive. But WHAT IF he comes back? He will be disappointed and might quit roblox.
