Subject title was too long, meant to say this after: (and is this idea good?)
A few weeks ago I thought of an MMORPG idea.
Basically, it'd be completely based on real-time. Thieves would be out at night while the NPC citizens would be indoors as an example. Of course, there'd be alternatives on the other side of the day/night, such as maybe later at night you could head to an inn to get quests, and during the day you could attack something like animals instead of thieves.
But I've been having a few issues, but one of the main issues I have is I have NO idea what the majority of players would like to see in an MMORPG. So, I want to know what you guys would like in an MMORPG. |

Hmm.
Good quests. When playing MMORPGs I like to get quite involved in the lore, and quests (as long as they're actually story-thick, GOOD quests that took the dev team a fair amount of time). For example, Runescape does this great - all of their recent, lore-based quests have been spectacular, and fun.
Adding to that, make sure you have a good narrative and good lore for your MMORPG, and deliver the narrative in an interesting way (I mean, come on, how many MMORPGs have we seen that just straight up deliver the narrative via a character talking?)
Have things in your MMORPG that are just plane grindy. Sometimes after a long day of school I just want to sit back and grind some Runescape - it' simple to do, and takes barely any effort or brain power.
Some other things that would also be very cool is item & weapon customization - you killed a boss and it dropped a sword, but you can customize the sword so it's your own. Also, if you have several combat styles it will make the game alot more fun.
Apart from that, it would be a smart idea to include multiplayer minigames within your MMORPG where players can play with eachother - the minigame should also have rewards and benefits actually linked to the game, and be fun! :D
Also, smart monsters, lots of bosses and a trading system sounds fine to me :) GL with your game |

SadisticNub,
I plan on writing at least a small portion of the lore as soon as I'm done building the terrain.
Now, here's where i'm kinda confused. How else do you really deliver narrative other than characters talking? I guess cutscenes and bosses could help a bit.
This is something I planned. For example, there will be optional quests after you finished an entire zone. There'll also always be mobs to train on just in case you want to get over the bosses level before you fight it.
This is DEFINITELY something I want to add to the game, though i'm not sure how i'd do it. Maybe a certain way to recolor the tool and add a decal.
The minigame concept is pretty cool, but to be honest, it'd be difficult to add rewards unless you're saying like an arena or like parkour of sorts. Arenas would add 2 more values though; elo and an honor system of sorts.
Trading sounds cool. Smart monsters... pathfinding doesnt work for me. So i'm sticking with the typical "find nearest torso and chase it" system. But I can make them act realistic where they'd walk around randomly when they aren't chasing you. And jump randomly. I'm definitely planning on lots of bosses.
Also, on a side note, I think I'll be able to set up cool extra bosses that require whole parties of 6 to beat. I know the final boss will be INCREDIBLY difficult for sure.
Another side note, classes are going to be added too. |
