Heyo! I'm PurelyRandom, or Justin, and I've been on RP quite awhile. You may or may not know me because I've only recently come back to the RP forum. Anyways, I made a guide awhile ago, but it's a bit outdated. Any suggestions are welcome, but they may or may not be implemented!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[NOTE : This "guide" will be posted in chunks, depending on how much time I have for each post. After the guide is complete, I WILL re-post it as one post and after that I may make edits here and there.]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

[ INDEX ]
( Welcome to the Role-Playing Forum! )
1.0 - Introduction
1.1 - Role-Playing Terms
1.2 - Types of RPs
1.3 - Genres
( Creating your own Role Play )
2.0 - The Process
( Joining other Role Plays )
3.0 - Etiquette
( Conclusion )
4.0 - Thanks!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[ 1.0 = INTRODUCTION ]
The Role-Playing Forum is, well, a forum where people can roleplay.
But what exactly is "roleplaying"? For starters, if you break down the word, you get two words: "role" and "play". The word "role" refers to a character that a person can take. For example, a role can be anything from a modern police officer to an ancient medieval knight to a mythical dragon. The word "play" refers to the acting out of that role.
So "roleplaying" is where people act out different roles. It's a little bit more complex than that, but that's the gist of it.
[ 1.1 = ROLE-PLAYING TERMS ]
There are a ton of terms that a lot of the veteran roleplayers use, and these may confuse you. To help you get a better understanding of the language we like to use, I've made this brief list:
RP - "Role-Play"; Refers to the thread or "post" that people roleplay in.
RP'er - "Roleplayer"; Refers to the people acting out the characters in the said roleplay.
DM - "Dungeon Master"; This is mostly used for Dungeons & Dragons related roleplays, but it is sometimes used to describe the person who controls the outcomes/results of a specific RP'er's action(s).
CS - "Character Sheet"; This is the form or "sheet" that RP'ers fill out to provide information about their character and perhaps get accepted into the roleplay.
God-Modding - This is when an RP'er is manipulating their character or the RP itself to benefit his/her own character; In other words, this is when an RP'er is playing the role of "god" and controlling everything else.
Mary-Sue / Gary-Sue - This is when an RP'ers character is generic, unoriginal, and possibly boring and dull; For example, taking a character straight from a book, movie, etc. or having your character's life involve cliches such as parents dying, being a "lone wolf", etc.
Admin / Mod - These can either refer to the Roblox Admins and Moderators or "admins" and "moderators" in an RP; Usually, these people (in the context of the RP admins and mods) have control of the RP and can decide to "ban" people from the RP.
OOC - "Out Of Character"; This abbreviation is used when someone is not speaking as though they are currently roleplaying. The opposite of this would be IC, or "In Character".
RPF - Short for the "Role-Playing Forum"
[ 1.2 = TYPES OF RPS ]
There is quite a variety of RPs, and the abbreviations for them may be confusing. To help you know what RPs to look for, I've made a brief list:
---
ISRP - "Interactive Story Role-Play"; These RPs (usually) consist of one RP'er and a DM. In this type of RP, the DM dictates what happens to the RP'er, while the RP'er plays the role of his/her character in the world. In other words, the DM plays the role of god, nature, and all the other characters that the RP'er doesn't control. (Sometimes known as "Single-player RP")
Examples:
* http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=148161569
* http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=146364531
---
"Classic RP" - These RPs are the ones you will see the most of. They consist of a brief introduction/story, a character sheet, and the role play (sometimes they include a Rules section, but not always).
Examples:
* http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=104339617
* http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=147589202
---
Nation RP - These RPs consist of one DM and one or more RP'ers. In this type of RP, the RP'ers lead nations/kingdoms to conquer each other, form alliances, etc. The DM dictates what happens, such as who wins each battle, etc.
Examples:
[ 1.3 = GENRES ]
There are a vast variety of genres used in the Role-Playing Forum. The most common and broad genres include: Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), Fantasy, Medieval, Modern, Steampunk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

[ 2.0 = THE PROCESS ]

There is a list of steps that you should take when creating your RP. I've organized it so that it's easy to follow, but you have to remember that most of it depends on you and how you want your RP to be.

~ 2.0a _ Select an RP Type and Genre ~

When selecting the genre for your RP, think about what inspires you or interests you. For example, if you hate animals, obviously you shouldn't make an RP about animals. One way to receive inspiration is through books, TV shows, and movies. Many RPs are based off of some form of media.

If you don't like to watch TV or read books, you can just think about a time period that you want (or wanted) to live in. For example, if magic wizards and brave knights are people who you like, then create a Medieval RP. Or, if fancy gadgets and gigantic spaceships interest you, create a Sci-Fi RP. The world is in your hands in your RP. You create the world.

After you've selected you genre, you need to decide on an RP Type. If you just want to get started right away and not worry about a lot of complications, create a "Classic RP". Otherwise, if you want to see how other RP'ers will behave in your world, choose to create an ISRP. Just narrow it down by looking at the examples of the types of RPs and decide which one(s) you like the most.

~ 2.0b _ Write your story ~

This step is often the most lengthy. You should have a story for your RP, since this will be the foundation of your RP and will explain to everyone what your RP is about. To help guide you through the process, look over the following guidelines:

---

* Make It Interesting - This is one of the first things everyone will see about your RP. You want to make sure the first few sentences are interesting and pull the reader in to make them want to join your RP. One way to do this is start off with a description of your RP's setting.

For example, if your RP starts in a grand futuristic city on the planet of Gallora, describe it as such. Explain how majestic it is. Describe the awesome skyscrapes, the shiny hover cars flying past, the crowded streets, and the view of the multiple planets up in the sky.

Or, if your RP takes place in a swampy prison town, give the reader a taste of that. Describe the lurking swamp monsters beneath the water, the eerie fog that surrounds the town, the twisted trees that barricade the prison, and the poor fisherman reeling in green, slimy fish.

---

* Make It Short and Sweet - This is the most difficult part of the story to get right. You don't want to leave the reader with an incomplete story, but you also don't want to make the reader leave because you have an enormous word wall standing in their way before the RP.

At the least, your story should be a couple paragraphs. At the most, your story should be a few paragraphs. In those few paragraphs, you should describe the setting, the problem that the RP'ers are trying to solve (such as defeating an evil mastermind or uniting the four warring kingdoms), and where the RP'ers will be when they start out.

Examples:
* http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=78354828
* http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=147145691

---

~ 2.0c _ Character Sheet (Optional) ~

The Character Sheet (or CS) is what RP'ers will need to fill out before they join your RP. This is what the average CS looks like:

Name:
A/ge:
Gender:
Bio:
Appearance:

You can add more fields, depending on what your RP is about. For example, you may include "Race:" if your RP consists of a variety of species that the RP'ers can RP as.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[ 3.0 = ETIQUETTE ]
If you don't want to get criticized, or "bullied" as some people call it, be sure to follow these guidelines.
---
1) Do NOT roleplay with asterisks (*) or hyphens (-).
One thing that makes you seem like a "noob", and perhaps, to some people, "incompetent" is roleplaying as follows:
*i eat the cake*
*I eat the cake.*
-i eat the cake-
-I eat the cake.-
Do NOT roleplay like this. People will tease you and your RP will be flooded by trolls and flamers for doing so. And no, grammar does NOT make it any better.
Instead, roleplay with a sentence. For example:
I eat the cake.
Now some of you may be asking: "How do I know if the person is talking or acting out an action?"
For that, we use quotation marks ("). For example:
I eat the cake and tell Jim, "This cake is delicious!".
In the above example, it's clear that the RP'er ate the cake (an action) and then told Jim something (talking).
---
2) Do NOT respond to trolls.
Face it, this is the internet and there are bound to be trolls. If a person is obviously trolling (for example, making up stupid character sheets, abusing the rules constantly, etc.), simply ignore them. They can't force you to read and acknowledge their posts, so just ignore them and continue on with the RP. If you want, you can also report them silently.
---
3) Please, take criticism!
Even if the critic seems mean, they are (usually) trying to HELP you! Many of the critics you will find are experienced RP'ers, and they know what they're talking about. If someone says "This RP sucks", then you can ignore them.
However, usually you'll find people saying stuff like "This RP sucks. You should fix your grammar and the story is pretty boring". That is a critic who is trying to help you out. Sure, it's somewhat harsh, but hey, they are giving you some pointers!
---
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

[ 4.0 = THANKS! ]

Alrighty, expect some edits as I continue to improve this guide. All criticism and suggestions will be considered.

All of this was written by me, with the exception of the examples I linked you to in some of the sections.

Thanks again!
- Justin

I don't get why we get the leading roleplaying forum guides, get those who wrote it (And some of the 'leaders' of this forum) and snip together a ultimate guide which is agreed on by the community; then stress for the mods to publish it as a permanent edition to this community.

@Insid; Not sure whose guide you're talking about, but I made the first RP forum guide. And no, it's not this thread. This thread is simply a cleaner and more updated version of my previous one, which was posted a couple years ago.
