run medium or high graphics on a game say...minecraft. I'm looking at laptops with 4GB worth of RAM, would that be good for at least medium settings? |

4 GB of ram is fine for Minecraft.
No need to spend so much money on a computer, folks. |

4GB of RAM can handle plenty of things, but RAM is not as important as the CPU (Processor) and GPU (Graphics Card). While a Laptop might seem like a smart choice, they tend to have lower end hardware and associated problems when compared with desktop computers of similar price, and they can't be upgraded; they must be replaced.
I would STRONGLY recommend a desktop computer. At the very least, a factory built desktop will give you much more performance in much the same price.
I would go for something with a dual-core processor. Do some research too, google around and look at certain components to see what they're like when compared with other things.
If you REALLY want a laptop (though, the cons outweigh the benefits in my opinion), then google some reviews for products you're interested in to see if they will work as intended and last. |

@humor
not anymore. The GTX M900 series caught up with the desktop series GPU where they perform about the same now. there's benchmarks comparing the same lineups now. |

@dans59 But are the prices similar to one another when compared between a laptop and desktop? How large of a difference is there? |

I hate it when people think laptops are better just because they're more portable. You get significant performance and long-term reliability downgrades with a laptop when compared to a desktop that cost the same amount.
RAM doesn't matter too much. All it is is basically how many programs you can run at once. Your CPU matters more. If your CPU has a speed of at least 3 GHz, it is a good purchase. But your GPU (graphics card) is what you're interested in most. Your GPU determines how well you can run games. An Nvidia GTX 560, which is only for desktops (and you usually have to buy it separately and put it into a computer), is enough to run Minecraft on high settings. An Nvidia GTX 760 has the most value for its price. With it, you can run any game at maximum settings at maximum framerates. You can even use Nvidia Control Panel to turn on settings that aren't even in some games, like how ROBLOX doesn't offer antialiasing or anisotropic filtering. |

@homur
if you want to go with a NVIDIA desktop build that has a GTX 970 or 980 in it, the prices will now roughly will be the same with a laptop having SIMILAR specs [1920x1080 display more or so]
higher res you'll need to pay for
but mind you, that same with desktop monitors, so... |

| What are you talking about? Laptops with the equivalent to desktop gaming computers with Nvidia 980 GPUs don't exist. If they did, and they were around the same price, everyone would be getting them. Just because a laptop has a GPU in it that's in the Nvidia 900 mobile series doesn't mean it will be the equivalent to a desktop that has a GPU from the Nvidia 900 desktop series. It just has a similar name. Nowhere near the same specs. |

| There's a reason people don't use tablets and laptops to play high-end games at maximum graphics. |

Not to mention price isn't the only factor working against laptops. You've also go longevity and upgradability (which are distinct, but connected). From my personal experience, laptops have a significantly shorter lifespan than desktops, and you'll find yourself buying a new laptop every few years, while a desktop can last a decade or more if treated properly.
Alongside that, upgrading a laptop is like fishing with a hula-hoop: It isn't going to work out well. While upgrading a desktop, even factory pre-built ones, can be done easily, extending the life of a computer in a larger way: its capability to run modern programs.
Not to mention things like cooling issues, space issues, and general cheapiness (in my opinion, at least; laptop screens and keyboards are terrible) that laptops have. Obviously there's going to be exceptions, but generally I've found these problems in laptops that aren't readily apparent, or at least not excessively apparent, in desktop computers. |

^ Please watch before making another comment like that. Also, please watch the benchmark graphs, as that will explain the performance to you with the 900 series for mobile and desktop.
@Humour Yes, you have upgrade-ability.
BUT, you're forgetting the target market for laptops. People who go to school (live in dorms, or travel a lot, and generally not home much, and want to game) |

And I work at NCIX, my JOB is to build PCs. I'm a PC technician and I'm well aware of the benifits of PCs too, BUT I'm not stubborn too, where I'm biased on one side. I look at things from a wide-angle. |

| I would think that tablets are trying to take the market that laptops have had for years. |
