What's your favorite and why?

Also this is not a debate as to which one is better, both are great sub genres and both hold excellently written pieces.

Hmm... I'm not so sure on that one.

However, in all honesty, I feel as if sci-fi subgenres in general aren't the most descriptive, and that they should instead be categorized into categories such as "Space exploration", "time-travel" and "Future ruled by robots", to name a few major plot elements that come to mind.

There's soft sci-fi.

Then there's hard sci-fi.

Then there's good sci-fi.

No no no, these two sub genre's actually make all the difference.

Ya'll take some time to look it up, and you'll see why.

Good examples of hard sci fi are things like Brave New World, or Farenheit 451 and both deal with dystopian societies and are based ENTIRELY on scientific fact or theories that could come to happen in the future.

Good examples of soft sci fi include things such as Halo, Star Wars, or the Hunger Games trilogy and deal less with the science. Things in soft Sci Fi aren't necessarily entirely scientifically accurate, no matter how well the author works it within his universe and is often times called "Sci Fantasy"

Soard, to give you a good example, GC is soft sci fi. GC would be COMPLETELY different if it were hard sci fi as there would be a lot less freedom in CS'es.

I prefer Soft Sci Fi because there's more room to work with in terms of possibilities. I think that Hard Sci Fi is more captivating though.

I completely agree Iagio.

I actually am going to disagree with you and say that soft sci fi can be more captivating, hence soft sci fi having a much larger fan base and often times having much larger universes to explore.

I think that hard sci fi is often comprised of much more... intelligent pieces to delve into and their really mind blowing to read, especially for pieces like Brave New World where you compare our society with their own and realize that in some cases we aren't all that different.

One word to end this debate once and for all: Foundation.

In all seriousness, though, I think that soft sci-fi has more room for creative freedom and so therefore more authors do soft sci-fi making it seem as if soft sci-fi worlds can go more in-depth, because all (well, most of) the good writers do soft and not hard.

Hard sci-fi, however, tends to make people think more about not just how everything in the fictional universe works but also makes people more interested in scientific fact, and can be a great gateway into academia.

To sum up what everyone's saying, including me, it depends on which aspects of a sci-fi book you're looking for.

Surprisingly tim, you really hit the nail right on the head their.

In my oppinion at least.

And I apologize if you don't understand this Raidorz.

I do dearly hope you cure your stupidity.

But I heard it can be pretty hard to get rid of. Some say it's like cancer.

Poor you.

Come to think of it Raidorz... why do you even come here?

It's obvious you know nothing of genre or sub genre, you don't participate in anything, and the few scant writing you've done is really kind of crappy and it's obvious that you put absolutely no effort into it.

Are you really that lonely?

*there.

And thanks. In other news, I don't think I've seen many hard sci-fi RPs, and the one time I tried to write one it was hijacked by people who don't understand science and turned into a soft sci-fi RP.

inb4 I shouldn't type so late at night.

To be honest, Hard sci fi is much harder to write as you're not necesarily creating a world from scratch and there's a lot more to keep in mind, so it's especially hard for younger people(Biggest populace here) to come up with a decent hard sci fi piece. I've only come up with one hard sci fi concept but even then it's not true hard sci fi.

Long story short, we're not going to see much of it here on roblox, we're all amateur writers with no established career, and even the oldest among us have a lot to learn.

Personally, I like writing in soft sci fi the most. I love world building and being able to create all the rules for said worlds. My Creation universe, or the one that pretty much assumed the role of big antagonist in GC is probably my oldest, albeit revamped plot.

As I said earlier, soft sci-fi allows for more creative freedom, and therefore it is only natural that there won't be many hard sci-fi pieces on ROBLOX. However, I choose to be an optimist, and I personally think that it wouldn't be impossible to do a hard sci-fi on ROBLOX, if we all put our minds to the task.

Also, one other question - Is Ender's Game hard or soft sci-fi? The first book seems more like hard sci-fi, until the end, and then the next three books in the series resemble soft sci-fi more...

Ender's game is generally accepted as Hard Sci Fi from my understanding. It follows more conventional science rules and doesn't utilize unproven devices such as warp drives, or other forms of ftl travel.

I'm not making fun of it. I'm debating over which sci-fi subgenre it goes under.

Although the movie sucked.
