When he was 11, it was decided that they would all move back to Los Angeles, and take up administrative tasks. However, midway through the flight, above Tucson, Arizona their helicarrier was hit by an ACMF shoulder fired rocket launcher. Paul Maddox, Judy Granger and The pilots were killed when they crash landed. The load-master, then Corporal, James Thomastown guided the two youngsters to the nearest USCPF outpost. They were flow to Los Angeles under the care of Cpl. Thomastown where he was placed in charge of them until they were 16. John Maddox hung around the USCPF post there and befriended other soldiers. At 17, he joined the USCPF with his younger brother. After less than a year he was promoted to the rank of PFC. Sadly, he was separated from his brother when he was selected for special forces. While John was flow to New Atlanta to undergo training, Tommy was lost in bureaucratic paperwork. While taking down a group of Sandsharks, John's right hand was destroyed by a malfunctioning stun grenade which resulted in him having a metal arm and hand installed. He was only 21. He served until he reached 32, and waited until the day he attained the rank of Major before resigning. Alone and used to military life, John spent two months looking for his brother, who turned up as a provost marshal's assistant under the rank of Sergeant in New York. They met briefly there, then John decided to move to Pearl City. He joined the CDF and was granted the status of Chief Marshal of Crane Town, responsible for both internal and external security, rather than combat.
