(Don't read if you have a short attention span)
Like in the SNES days, I think Nintendo was at the top of their game(pun intended).
It seems that ever since the N64, they've been getting progressively behind and behind, and this isn't just about hardware, but software innovation, and the reason I say N64 is that's when Nintendo seemed to start relying on 1st and 2nd party titles to even sell their platform. Can you remember any decent 3rd party titles for the N64 that were good? I sure can't.
I see innovative titles on the other platforms, but Nintendo's platform? Everything feels dated. 3DS games just feel like N64 games with extra umph, the Wii U seems to be the red-headed step child of the console family (in that it get's the short end of the stick).
Not only that, but the Wii U, to me, has games that don't really look much better than Xbox 360 games (especially ones like Forza 4 and Halo 4). Sure, they run in 1080p/60 fps, but there's more to visual fidelity than that.
All I'm saying is that Nintendo has really declined. They used to have an edge over their competitors, hardware wise and software wise. Can you think of anything the Sega Genesis offered that rivaled the experience of a game like FF6? Or Chrono Trigger? Neither games I particularly like, but they were cutting edge experiences at the time. Initially, even the PS1 didn't offer games like that. |

Well the thing is Nintendo has a different approach in this whole console thing While their big brothers fight over who is better Nintendo knows their place and just kinda goes on with what they can do. They'll never be on par as the current gen consoles but you at least have to respect their sense of position. |

I agree Nintendo aren't as good as they were, but they're still better than Microsoft, at least. For starters, they're making proper game consoles, which easily puts them a step ahead of the inferior PCs that the other two have become (yes, Yahtzee said it first, but that doesn't mean I can't agree with his views). Microsoft made a massive mistake by pretending it's console was a multimedia console, which failed when all it's promised exclusive features were never released. The Play Station looks like a good console and, having never so much as gone near one, I'm not the person to pass judgement onto it. One of the problems the Wii U had, was that it never really had any killer apps, like every other console has. This is probably one of the big reasons it failed, as there's not really much to keep you playing it. I'm sure the new band of games'll help with that, but only time will tell, unfortunately. Innovation is something that I think's taken a while to come, which is unfortunate. Smash Bros looks good though, and so does Mario Kart 8. About Graphics, I would like to ask you, how many of the other console's games have "realistic" graphics? Browns, greys, typical war/apocalyptic fare? The Wii U may not be as advanced, but it's much more creative, with a lot more colour. Realism's all well and good, but you can only have so much before it gets boring, and cliched.
They have declined, sure, but so has everyone. The Wii U's just taken a while to bloom, so to speak. The PS4'll probably win, though, and for plenty of good reasons.
And about the Genesis, it had Sonic the Hedgehog, Ristar, Kid Chameleon, Comix Zone, Shinobi, and many other games. The SNES may have been better overall, but you can't simply dismiss the Mega Drive's gems. |

@wifi
Yeah. I respect that they're trying to do their own thing, but I feel like they are digging their own grave in doing so. I'm not implying that they will go under (Nintendo is sitting on a boatload of cash), but in the distant future that will kill them.
@Jack
You're right with the graphics bit. Sony/Microsoft games do tend to gravitate towards photorealistic, and sometimes, boring, aesthetics, while Wii U games tend to remind me more of Pixar-like aesthetics. I like both types, but it would be nice if the Wii U could run more photorealistic aesthetics, as it would be nice if Sony/Microsoft games featured more colorful aesthetics. |

I have to agree with you there. By the distant future I doubt any of the current console manufacturers will still be popular except for Sony, maybe

The xbone and ps4 offer little improvement from their predecessors X360 and PS3 respectively. If you ask me, that's no reason to upgrade. Ninty has the Wii U Gamepad which is more innovative then say a graphic card improvement. Of course, that innovation has fallen flat on Nintendo's face in the meantime: it's just a gimmick at this point. Not for a lack of trying.
But in order for anything to advance, businesses need to take risks and practical ones at that, not ones made solely for profit. Microsoft and Sony sticks to the same ol' bread and butter CoD DLC deluxe sandwich. Nintendo isn't afraid of failure, they'll push anything if they deem it 'new' and 'fresh'.
At the end of the day, there is no good company since they all exist to make money. I guess my point is that we, as consumers, should buy that new toy every once in a while. |

The reason the n64 wasn't so good with 3rd party was because not many people knew how to do 3D games well so just tried to copy off of mario 64's style

| I'd love it if nintendo just stopped making consoles and became a 3rd party developer. Their consoles are nothing new anymore, they are really just a place to house their games. |

"it would be nice if they stopped doing home consoles and focused on handheld and 3rd party development"
Yeah.
Even though the 3DS has outdated hardware, it is performing well, sales wise, so Nintendo should still focus on the handheld market.
It's funny how I see advertisements all the time for the 3DS, the system that is selling well and not in need of much advertising, and then I hardly see any advertisements for the Wii U.

Also if they made developing for the 3DS more open like steam, they could be even more successful
I want to see nintendo do this |

| Nintendo has obviously made at least one huge mistake with each of their consoles since the N64, and I feel like they're doing everything wrong while trying to be unique. |
