Your troops are tired after running all this way. But you must not allow the empire to fall. This bridge is the only way across to your capital city, but you don't have the time or resources to damage it enough to cut the enemy off. A runner came, telling you that the city would send reinforcements whenever they were available, but for now you will have to make do with what you have.
The enemy will arrive soon.
YOUR FORCES:
Conscripts: New, untrained fighter, armed with a spear and buckler. 350
Swordsmen: Tough melee fighter armed with a sword. Effective against other infantry. 250
Bowmen: Strong ranged soldier, with a longbow. Good against infantry and cavalry. 150
Chariots: Fast chariot pulled by horses that carries 2. Adaptable, as you can load any type of infantry in. 10
Catapults: Large catapult, perfect for destroying large clusters of enemies. 2
Good luck. |

| Hmm. I order my men to put the catapults rather far from the bridge, but not to far as to where it can shoot over or onto the bridge. I'd order my archers to take formation along the riverside, and my Conscripts and Swordsmen are to form a line of men, an army ready to charge, conscripts first, swordsmen second. I'd take out 20 archers and 20 swordsmen. I'd have the trained swordsmen switch their swords out for spears, and the chariots would carry a trained bowman and trained spearman each. I'd set the chariots up by the catapults, to charge in when needed. |

| I order 1/4th of my bowmen to fire at the chariots, the rest fire at the conscripts. After the wave of arrows is over, I look at the formation of the remaining wave, if they're alive. |

The bowmen fire. From the other side of the bridge, you can hear the screams as conscripts die and flee. When the arrows settle, there are 15 conscripts and 1 chariot left.
The chariot turns and flees, with the conscripts running after it. |

| They retreat. In the meantime, you now have a chance to plan and set up defenses. |

| You are disappointed, because there is no river. (See the sign-up OP, durr. It specifically says Chasm, not river.) |

I look how deep the chasm is. And what type of bridge is created, stone, wood, etc. |

The bridge is mostly made of stone on top, with extensive wood supports.
You look up, and see the second wave of enemies arriving!
Conscripts: 60
Bowmen: 30
Chariots: 20
This seems to be a light, mobile skirmish force. Should be relatively easy to defeat. |

With relatively few men to crush, and since catapults aren't exactly accurate, only a few enemy conscripts are killed.
However, your bowmen meet much more success, killing the horses and men inside the chariots.

| I order the catapults forward for more accuracy. I order my bowmen to continue firing on the chariots. When the bowmen and conscripts arrive at the line, have the chariots ride behind the line and fire over at the troops the line is combatting, without going in close battle. |

The catapults move forward, but again, with so few enemies, they have a tough time.
The enemy bowmen stay back, and shoot some of your conscripts. However, your bowmen eliminate most of the enemy chariots.
And finally, when the enemy conscripts and yours clash, chaos ensues. But still, your chariots move over and fire into the enemy conscripts, killing a few.

| I order 3 chariots to charge in, and go against the conscripts. I order some of my bowmen to fire at the chariots, the rest on other bowmen. I order my swordsmen and conscripts to make squads, group up against one man, to take him down and move to the next. |

Your 3 chariots charge in, adding to the chaos but providing a pause as your conscripts and swordsmen group up and start destroying the enemy troops one by one.
Your bowmen fire on the last enemy chariot, and it goes down. Then, concentrating their fire on the opposing bowmen, arrows begin to fly.

The bowmen move and fire arrows into the combat. A few accidentally hit your own troops.
Meanwhile, the enemy bowmen are firing in, not caring about their own losses.

| Have the bowmen charge in, get up close, along with all the chariots too. Have groups of 2 bowmen, 2 conscripts, and 2 swordsmen, or atleast close to that. |

Your bowmen aren't made for close range combat, and several are slaughtered.
The chariots, however, charge forward and destroy the enemy bowmen.
