| so being able to violate some's private land without consequences is free? I don't think it's freedom in the eye of the land holder. |

francis, as long as you're not breaching the peace [which would be entering private property] of course you can't go outside for the above reason, but if you're outside their house or building and it's not protected [such as a field] then you can just walk through it

this thread made me think and I'm confused because if I have total freedom surely that includes freedom to restrict the freedom of others but then I'm restricting their freedom...

| In a true libertarian society, where there is as little government as possible and ergo the most 'free' you can do whatever YOU want on your property. That means shooting someone if they come on it. That isn't the case in America though you can still get in trouble for going on someone's property, just as you could get in trouble for I don't know, putting graffiti on someone's car. |

| Don't get confused though, there may still be laws in a libertarian society that can be enforced, it's just that things like property are held to a much higher degree of ownership and control. |

but if they refuse to get off your land and you want them to, it's breaching the peace. it was generally for roaming around since hiking and trekking is actually a rather large business in Scotland, especially the Highlands. In America, I bet while you're driving on those terribly long interstate roads, the sparse deserts beside them are probably owned by somebody.

not every country allows them to speak publicly against their own government
even though that backfires because only the real idiots get their voice out there, it's still a good form of freedom to have.

@rossb654mail
most of those deserts are owned by the government. and if the land is owned by a private individual, a fence or signs are usually placed around to warn people they aren't allowed to enter. |

ok great i suppose another reason is that unlike america who still believe that global warming isn't happening [seriously, you are the worst country in the world for any type of progressive action] and in scotland 30% of our energy is made from renewables, so we basically sell land for pennies to people who are going to invest in renewable energy there but if they don't, then this law helps everyone so that they can walk across

| We sell land too, but only if you're going to actually use it for something. In fact buying land from the federal government almost always costs WAY LESS than buying it from a private owner. |

Also the...
Mojave Solar Project=
The Mojave Solar Project (MSP) is a solar thermal power facility under construction in the Mojave Desert in California, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Barstow. Surrounding the hamlet of Lockhart, Mojave Solar is adjacent to Harper Lake and the SEGS VIII–IX solar plant. The 250 MW concentrating solar power (CSP) plant will cost an estimated $1.6 billion in total and should be completed in 2014. The developer, Abengoa, has successfully secured a $1.2 billion loan guarantee from the US government for the project. |

Solar Energy Generating Systems
Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) is the name given to nine solar power plants in the Mojave Desert. SEGS I-VII are located at Kramer Junction, and SEGS VIII and IX are at Harper Lake and Barstow respectively. The SEGS power plants were commissioned between 1984 and 1991. The installation uses parabolic trough solar thermal technology along with natural gas to generate electricity. The facility has a total of 400,000 mirrors and covers 1,000 acres (4 km²). The plants have a total generating capacity of 354 MW, making the system the largest solar plant of any kind in the world.

it isn't exactly illegal to walk on someone's property
that sort of law is left up to the state, and in my state it's really only illegal if you break into their home. |

indeed mentel however we do have a parliament it can create scottish laws and has control over education, laws and our health service but that's only 7% of the budget, and let's face it: england wont give us more powers which is why another independence referendum will happen
