This is the second in a series of threads looking into video game psychology, starting with "What makes horror games so scary?"
For this thread, we will be using Counter-Strike(Global Offensive), as suggested on the last thread. Which will be reffered to as CS.
// War & Graphics /\ Adrenaline & Immersion, Fantasies \\
One of the reasons any sort of game is fun is because it fills fantasies, such as becoming a soldier, knight, being pursued by slender, etc. Games can be used to cause any sort of emotions, mainly happiness, sadness, and horror. In FPS games, Immersion is one of the things needed for this fantasy to work. Having a high level of immersion makes the fulfillment of the fantasy more realistic, completing the experience.
In CS, the graphics are *PRETTY* dang good. This means that the players are immersed inside of their war fantasy, making them feel like a soldier and causing a state where you forget about your controller/keyboard completely, and you focus on being the soldier. One of the main things to fulfill in this is the feeling of risk, action, and being awarded for it. In the game, you must move at a fast pace killing others, making the war fantasy feel amazing. This action helps immerse you FURTHER, making the game even more fun. The risk of losing makes you willing to work together and want to win at all costs, which all in all fulfills fantasies, teamwork, and also the sense of success, all of which could be solved by things IRL but supplied directly by the game.
// Strategy & Rewards /\ Fufillment & The Skinner Box \\
In a lot of games, the reason we play is fulfillment. Wether it is via rewards or just making us feel epic(Or the opposite, called "Cthulu" as a psychological thing in games), games reward us. This is called the Skinner Box. How the theory was preposed was: A chicken is in a box, with a big red blowy button. When the chicken presses the button, seed comes out of a seed dispenser. Naturally, the chicken continues pressing the button, and gaining rewards.
We learn from the game(CS) that killing others equals more rewards, leading to an immersion and happiness cycle. Early on, you die a ton, challenging you and leading you through the leveling cycle until you begin to feel epicness, continually leading us to become more immersed. This means the more immersed you get, the more you kill. The more you kill, the more epic you feel. The more epic you feel, the better you do, getting more rewards and feeling great. This continually happens, making you addicted to the game. The Skinner Box also applies to games like Clash of Clans.(This will be addressed in another thread.)

@Eperent Even though the immersion isn't as good, this still applies for roblox; it just has a different atmosphere. The action can substitute for graphics. |

@Chocolate
In war thunder, it's basically just an FPS with more focus on upgrades. This means that the player can customize their planes, allowing for different levels of the same plane and more competitive play. This is almost the same with any FPS, as this allows for custom load outs and high levels of strategy. This also fulfills a different fantasy of war, but in the skies. And to emphasize their awesome plane, It's also 3rd person I'm pretty sure. |
