After the Daiichi and Chernobyl [though chernobyl was caused by man]
most NPP are by the coast, and rely on the coast for the water to cool the core, nuclear energy is almost unlimited source of power, and currently the safest, which doesn't hurt the earth, unlike coal.
Fu kushima and Chernobyl, are long abandoned, though you can visit them and stay for a few days, radiation levels will only leave in a few hundred years [2 or so lifetimes] NPP are some of the most guarded and safest energy sources currently, which have several different fail-safes and guards to stop a radiation leak, the only downside of nuclear power is the water that is used to cool the core is now radiated, and turns into a molten liquid that would almost kill if you were near or even touched it.
The waste isn't the problem, radiation leaks which contaminate miles of land, is, in Chernobyl, when the plant exploded while the operators were conducting a test on the reactor, the rods were under so much pressure, they ripped from their fixed places, and literally blew up the cover holding the reactor, causing an explosion and radiation leaks, which after a while, caused a radiation cloud and caused radiation all over the globe, though not enough to do any kind of damage.
The current plants most of the countries use, are at sea to use sea water, but what happened in Fu kushima is, as the country was hit by a tsunami, several waves hit the plant and caused damage, making the reactor overheat, after a while shutting down, then releasing a variable amount of radiation. Fu kushima, now abandoned, the only lives there are animals, which are fed by residents in other towns.
My idea would be to place nuclear powerplants away from cities, near reservoirs and lakes, either designed or not for them, either way. This minimizes the risk of natural disasters risking a contamination, and in case of a incident, the radiation wouldn't risk lives, and cause complete damage to land.

| Nuclear explosions spread by air and water. The idea is to make them safer. Not place them in an area away from people. |

50 years ago they thought nuclear power plants would create atom bomb style blast.
Now we know differently. |

true...
tho i'd like to see more wind turbines, japan is trying to fight for more of them, instead of NPP's

I never said they just explode. I said they explode. and I love how you go to one point of my sentence because the rest goes against your statement that you wrote up for 15 minutes probably. |

The real threat is a meltdown. poofing radiation into the air.
"causing an explosion and radiation leaks," I actually mentioned explosion because you said this in your paragraph. I was kinda following your statement.... reactors do not explode. |

a meltdown, if not treated properly, will melt out of the containment, cause and explosion, and a radiation cloud.
they dont just " explode " |

| I think you should really look up how a nuclear reactor works. It doesnt explode like a bomb. it instead poofs out radiation rapidly when it gets too hot. |

| a nuclear reactor that is out of control does not explode like an atomic bomb. it instead blows up and radiation spreads into the atmosphere. So again, like I was saying...... the problem is not where a reactor is placed. the problem is how to make it safer. Air currents spread very far. we still have radiation in california in the cows milk from the radiation in japan |

| and the problem is not an explosion... the explosion is not anything of near importance as the radiation that expands in the atmosphere. |
