A new species of worm has been discovered living underwater. It has only been discovered recently, during a diving trip near The Bahamas. This worm has been called "Shark Worm". It is a pale blue worm, about the size of a rat, and it has a small-ish translucid fin on each side of the body. These worms latch onto sharks using their mouth, and begin sucking on their blood. They often use the corpse of the dead sharks as nests. They also feed on fish, although they prefer sharks. This would not be such a problem if it was not for the fact that 98% of the population of shark worms is infected with a disease they are biologically immune to, which attacks blood vessels and red blood cells. This disease has been called "Shark Flu"
Forms of transmission:
This disease can be contracted mainly through bodily fluids, although they can survive on warm water, but for a very limited period of time (About 1 to 2 days).
Symptoms:
Day 1:
The disease begins attacking the blood vessels in the eye, which causes eye redness. It also begins attacking the blood vessels in the brain, which causes mild headaches. Red blood cells begin disappearing, which implies fatigue and/or tiredness.
Day 2:
Vision begins becoming slightly blurred, barely noticeable. Headaches slowly become more and more painful. Pressure on the brain causes dizziness. Tiredness keeps increasing.
Day 3:
The disease begins attacking other organs. As the intestine has an enormous amount of blood vessels, the disease causes hematochezia, or bleeding in the lower GI tract.
Day 4:
Eyesight becomes worse. Body-wide internal hemorrhage.
Day 5:
Death usually ensues on day 5, because of either:
-Exsanguination (Bleeding out) -Asphyxia, caused by the lack of red blood cells to supply the organs with oxygen -Multiple organ failure
NOTE: What makes this disease so deadly is the fact that the first symptoms, red eyes, mild headaches and tiredness are also the symptoms of minor sleep deprivation, which may cause doctors to mistakenly simply advise a therapist or prescribe sleeping pills.
PATIENT ZERO:
The disease was contracted when an especially resistant strand of the Shark Flu stayed alive in a shark fin, and was then consumed somewhere in eastern china. |
