There is a current science called "quantum locking". It was explained in TheGameTheorists' video on Bioshock infinite. Quantum locking, essentially, allows an object to "levitate" (that's not what it's doing exactly, but we're using the term here to explain it).
Here's a video of it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws6AAhTw7RA
Basically, the "levitating" object is a superconductor locked in space, hence its other name "quantum trapping". However, as with many good things, there's a catch: there *needs* to be a magnet below. This does not prevent it from moving, as shown with the video, even with great velocity. Thus the solution is: a large magnetic skateboard with the "hoverboard" above it.
TL;DR actual hoverboards are completely scientifically possible provided you don't mind a skateboard a foot or so below it.

woah. i just question the very point on why we must have vehicles that hover. just because it's cool? |

@Evil because of the ridiculously low amount of friction @Cross only problem being we need to cool the object to a crazy low temperature for superconductors to even happen |

"only problem being we need to cool the object to a crazy low temperature for superconductors to even happen"
yes
however in the video they used liquid nitrogen
which was still somehow safe for him to touch (yeah I don't know either)
" just question the very point on why we must have vehicles that hover. just because it's cool?"
basically because it's cool and it will make a crazy amount of money

doesn't that completely defeat the purpose though |

liquid nitrogen is -198 celsius i think The problem isnt cooling it to that its to maintain the temperature |

ooh ooh!
what if they had special roads for hoverboards with these special magnetic skateboards UNDER the road
or better yet, the road just plain being made of some rolling magnets
sort of like a conveyor belt
but magnets
then you put your hover board on that, get on, turn on the magnets, and ride along the special road for hover boards lets all go to the lobby|noot noot hype lives forever|add one postcount pls |

Or you could build highways made specifically for hover-vehicle travel and magnetize that instead Seems a bit more convenient than having a magnetic skateboard beneath it; it's almost the same as regular skateboarding

Oh, I didn't catch your post But yeah, hover highways and stuff would solve it

"powerful magnets m8"
i.e the simpler cheaper option which is less stable and more likely to make you fall off

I can only imagine that you're on a hoverboard a mile up and someone just kicks the magnet-skateboard from underneath

| The only thing I can see hover vehicles getting a 1up on wheels is speed because of no friction. Those kind of speeds wouldn't be safe at all though. I would hope they never go like the Star Wars style highways in the sky, because that would be crazy |
