These people on YouTube are trying to argue with me that a movie that isn't rated R is inherently not art.
Their argument is that if the movie isn't rated R then the artist has restrictions and so they aren't using their full artistic potential and are holding back.

| Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities; this article focuses primarily on the visual arts, which includes the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of art or the arts.[1] Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts. |

| Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. There's so many kinds of art films; they're not restricted to only being art if they're R-rated. I consider the animated film The Illusionist an art film, and it's rated PG. But the art is interesting, not a single word of dialogue is spoken in the movie, and it's very mellow and contemplative. |

| Then again, I quite enjoyed the first 3 Indiana Jones films and would actually consider them as art. |

Citizen Kane is rated PG. If there is ANY movie that is art, it is Citizen Kane.

This is the same as saying that every movie has to have tons of violence and fanservice in order to be good
what the helms deep
a rating is an AGE rating. not a rating on how artful the movie is |

That implies that all people who are making movies that are less than R are restraining themselves, which is certainly not the case.
Just because there are restraints doesn't mean you're held back by them. |

That's correct. Beasts of the Southern Wild IS art. So is the original Star Wars, which is considered to be one of the best film series in history. There are so many on this art list. I could just go on forever.
Art doesn't have to have restrictions. In fact, art shouldn't have them at all. It should be open and free for everyone to see.

| Actors preform by what the Director or Choreographer tells them to do. Unless improvised, they are just reading a script and trying to make it real. Therefor the rating is not relevant to the actors performance/artwork at all. |
