(THIS IS ALL MY OPINION)
it's a complete load of crap. i'll give you an example;
in the early 80's in australia, an afl (australian football league) club called south melbourne were struggling financially due to poor results and a generally poor team. the vfl (victorian football league was the old name) decided, "hey, let's move a club with big support to sydney, a city with no team who all love rugby and hate afl!".
if it wasn't for some of the biggest names in the vfl/afl going to play there, they would've never of even gotten more than 20,000 people to watch games. and we're talking about a city that until a few years ago, had only one club in the afl and still had the biggest population in the country.
another example is the atlanta thrashers (i bash the nfl and the mls but i do like hockey). when they were granted a franchise, it was thought that they would give nhl a greater presence in the south, along with phoenix, who relocated from winnipeg. both atlanta and phoenix have bigger markets to tap into, yet look at the both of them. the thrashers were relocated to winnipeg and phoenix is wishing they stayed in winnipeg. both cities and urban areas outside the cities outmatch winnipeg, yet barely got anyone to their games.
this is just a copy from wikipedia regarding the jet's first season back in the nhl and their season ticket sales:
"Season ticket sales began June 1, 2011, with Manitoba Moose season ticket holders having priority. The team sought to sell 13,000 season tickets in an effort to prove its viability.[13] Within the first three and a half hours the new franchise sold 1,870 packages to Moose season ticket holders.[14] Season tickets opened to the general public on June 4 and sold out in just 17 minutes.[15] Once the 'Drive to 13,000' was completed, TNSE started a season ticket waiting list, which was shut down after 8,000 people had signed up in two hours.[16] In July 2011, tickets for the Oct 9 home opener versus the Montreal Canadiens were listed for an average price of $1,711 on Stubhub, with an average selling price of $713[17]"
neither the cotes nor the thrashers have ever had that fanfare even with the huge populations they could've easily tapped into.
and don't get me started on why la is a horrible place to put a team of any sport.
if people think a club won't work just because it's in a small market and that they're better off relocating to a bigger area, they're completely and utterly stupid and should shoot themselves with the first gun they see. |

| It all matters about the ownership as well. The Stars relocated from Minnesota, and we have a decently strong fan base in Texas of all places.. |

Some teams have horrible owners yet still have big attendance records. Other clubs still get fans to show up even though they suck ass.
Look at Columbus for example. Their fan-base has been hugely loyal to them even though the BJ's sucked for so long (it's like they knew Columbus would suck before they got into the NHL with that name).

| the jaguars are owned by the guy who runs fulham, so they should get a new owner based on seeing his running of a once decent premier league team. |

| Anyone who says small market teams can never work obviously haven't heard of the Green Bay Packers. |

| The city of Green Bay itself is not a big market at all, and is in fact the smallest metropolitan area in the United States to have a major professional sports team. They attract fans from all over the rest of Wisconsin though, so they still have a lot of local fans. |

@ddue. Ya you and you. Being 28th in the league for attendance does not mean you have a big following.
Welp |

MLB has had a lot of really good moves.
Kansas City Athletics to Oakland Milwaukee Braves to Atlanta Montreal Expos to become the Washington Nationals
