I am sitting at the edge of the campfire, the one that I decided to set up for myself. Two people I don't know are setting up their tents, to add to the tens of hundreds already here. I don't know why we need so many tents if it's only the three of us, but I don't bother to ask. I look around, and it is now pitch black outside, with the light of the fire aiding our vision. We are in the middle of the forest, the only forest here on Xeron, which makes it seem even more eerie at night. I don't know where we are, or how I got here, but all I know is that we're going camping. Like the good old days of living, my father would always say.
I stand up, and offer a hand to one of the men. He sure could use one. He doesn't budge. His eyes are focused on the task at hand, and he won't acknowledge my presence. I see the fire grow dim as it starts to rain. I should have built it underneath a tarp. I didn't even bother to notice the clouds overhead. I'm so stupid at times.
I quickly cover the fire with a tarp, but it's too late. It's already died out. I start to cry, but I don't know why. I failed to keep the fire lit, and for some reason, I feel like I've failed more than just that. But why am I here right now? I don't recall going camping. I try to remember my thoughts from the previous day, but it's as if this is the first day of my whole life. I can't remember anything.
I hear noises outside the wooden fence, the one surrounding our giant camp. I hesitate a bit, but I somehow feel that I am in no danger at all. I walk past the fence, and I see a face in the bushes. I try to make out the face, but they continue to stare through the holes in the fence, without noticing me. My heart skips a beat. They don't acknowledge my presence. Is it maybe because I'm dead? I don't know, but it seems strange. Maybe my skin is too transparent for them to see me. The joke settles in my head before I realize that it isn't funny.
The men outside the fence motion to one another, and I am still standing there, peaking through the holes in the fence, trying to see what they're pointing at. I take a look at my watch, and it reads "11:30." As soon as I take my eyes off of my watch, the action unfolds. The sky lights up, and so does the campground. The men start to throw flares at our camp, as if to aid in their attack. I look back at the men setting up the tent, but they both look at one another, dumbfounded.
"We're being attacked!" I hear someone yelling. This can't be good. So much for having s'mores by the fire. I frown a little.
Suddenly, everything lights up with fireballs. I see craters being unleashed as landmines are set off. Bodies fly everywhere, and I look back at the men. They try to run, but they don't make it. They both step on a landmine, and they are both flung into the air like rag dolls. I want to sob, but it's as if I can't. My vision goes blurry. Maybe dead people don't have the capacity to cry.
But I realize that none of this is real. My memories suddenly come back to me, and I realize that I'm in a dream. I start to wake up, but I force myself to stay asleep. As long as I'm in this dream, I need to see how much of the future I can actually see. I remember Leporum being hung by a rope just a few hours ago, so I need to see where he is. I need to see if he'll still be alive when I wake up.
I run through the campground, which is now completely destroyed, and weave myself past the people that are attacking us. I can't find him. This isn't good. My vision starts to go spotty, and I realize that I'm starting to wake up. I can't wake up, not now. I need to know what will happen to my brother, or what has happened to him.
I hear a ripple go through the sky. I look up, and I see one of two giant space ships leave the ground. Why would anyone want to go into space at a time like this? I keep looking, reminding myself that this is still a dream, no matter how weird it may be, so this won't make sense to me at first. My eyes start to open up, but I need to stay asleep. I continue looking at the spaceships, and I suddenly wish I hadn't. Within mere seconds, the fuel tank on one of them explodes, and the ship starts to crash down back to Xeron. I look away before I see the explosion.
I don't have much time. I run, and I see the rebels and citizens alike, being pushed to the ground by the attackers. I try to make out one of the attacker's faces, and it belongs to Leporum.
That's when I wake up.
-----------------
I open my eyes, and I suddenly wish I hadn't. I feel pain in every part of my body, but I have to ignore it. The first thing I do is look at my watch. It reads "7:00." It makes no sense, though. Everywhere I look, there's light, which would be nearly impossible, as it starts to get dark at 6:30 here on Xeron. I must have been asleep all night, and it's now morning.
I soon realize that I'm in the back of a truck, as my body jostles with every fading second, as we are travelling over rocky terrain. I hear movement on the roof of the truck, but I try to ignore it. I try to stand up, and that's all I can really do. I am surrounded by solid grey bars, which separates the man in the cell next to mine. He has spiked, purple-tinted black hair. His eyes are huge and alert, and that's what I fear the most.
"I thought you'd never wake up," he starts to joke, but when I don't laugh with him, his expression goes stern. "I saw what the rebels did to you. I'm sure you would have died, had it not been for Rayna's last-minute orders."
"Who are you, and why are you talking to me?" I ask, though I'm not annoyed. I'm just filled with so much pain, I can't control the way the words come out, but I assume they came out the wrong way.
He looks at me. "The name's Turbo," he smiles, proudly, "I got the nickname because of how fast I am. I was given it by my mom, after I came back home with our groceries in record timing."
My head is pounding, and I find myself ignoring him. I look out the tiny window, but all I can see is the wasteland in which we are going over. I suddenly become interested in what he has to say, though. Maybe he knows where my brother is, and maybe I can save him. A pain enters my stomach. There's a slim chance he's alive, but I need to keep my hopes up.
"Where are we going?" I ask him in a very monotonic way.
"We're going to the Xeronian Jungle."
I cringe. The same jungle in my dream. I don't even ask him what they plan on doing there, because I already know they'll be setting up camp.
"What happened?" I ask, but then I realize I haven't really given a clear question. I restart. "I mean, what happened... after I passed out?"
He laughs. "Well, what didn't happen? Basically, after you got your butt kicked in front of pretty much everyone, Leporum was dragged into a truck, and that's when everyone was ordered to pack their things and get ready to leave. The rest of the prisoners, myself included, were separated into different trucks, each being driven by an authorized guard."
He must have been one of the prisoners, waiting to be hanged on the noose that could have claimed the life of my brother. He eyes the window that separates our view from the driver, and continues. "Had it not been for you, I'm sure we would have all been hanged in front of everyone. Whatever you yelled out from that rooftop sure did grab Rayna's attention, which is why she ordered the guards to stop beating you half to death, and why she ordered the rope to be cut on the noose."
I don't understand. She was ready to have my brother and I killed, but decided to spare us both. Well, she spared me, at least. I still don't know if Leporum is alive or not. But why? Why would she want us to live? It gives me a weird feeling, knowing I must be important somehow, but I need to settle the nervousness. I decide that getting to know Turbo might help to ease some of the pain. But not before I ask one more question.
"What does she want from me? And is my brother alive?"
He shrugs his shoulders. "Knowing Rayna, she just wants information. She seems to be really keen on knowing our ancient secrets, and will do anything to acquire them." He pauses. "And as for your brother, he was in pretty bad shape once the rope was cut. If you ask me, I don't think he's alive. But if Rayna really wants you to give her information, she's probably trying her best to keep him alive. I'd remain hopeful, if I were you."
Alec and Abe must not have been given the same fate as me. They don't need Alec, as far as I know, and after I saw him getting brutally attacked, I have a hard time believing that he's alive. And as for Abe, he just disappeared randomly, leaving no trace behind. He's a mysterious man, but it doesn't really affect me that much. He may have saved my life, but it's better if he was dead. I can't trust him.
I suddenly don't care if I befriend Turbo, and I just sit there, looking out the window, for what seems like hours. I wonder if Leporum is in fact being taken care of, but I highly doubt it. But then again, if that woman, Rayna, wants me to give her information, she can go die for all I care. If Leporum is dead, I'm not telling her anything, whatever she seems to want me to tell her, anyways. But was it really so important for her to keep all the prisoners alive? She can't honestly believe that the information I have depends on all their lives. Does she?
Maybe she's right.
I start to close my eyes, hoping I can be given another dream, something to give me closure. I need to know what information Rayna wants, so I can be prepared for the worst. But before I can fall asleep, the truck hits a bump, and we start to slow down to a stop. I look at Turbo, who has just woken up, and we both stand in our cells. I look out the window, and I see a tree. We must be in the jungle now. But that's not the only thing I see. I see flashes of gunfire, and it stops nearly as soon as it starts. I look at the back door of the truck, as I now hear someone banging on it. The door opens, and I see Abe, with a gun pointed at us.
"Abe, what the hell are you doing here?" I ask him.
"Here to save your sorry butt again, sir," he says in a sarcastic voice. He pulls out keys from his pocket, and releases Turbo and I from our cells. I expect Turbo to make a run for it, but he just looks at me, waiting for me to get out first. I rush out of the truck, following Abe, with Turbo right behind me.
"Where are the others?" I ask. "Alec, Leporum, Dezstar..."
"They'll be fine," he says. "Alec is working on freeing your brother and friend in one of the other trucks. We'll be meeting at a secret location in the jungle."
He starts to run, and I follow him. I don't know what's happening, but all I know is that I'm free.
And my brother might be alive. |
