| Free speech allows you to do anything. But you aren't allowed to threaten people. |

freedom of speech is a human right the cases in which it is restricted should be extreme, examples given:
- you can't scream fire in a theater - you can't say something like "hey, i'm gonna assassinate the president" - the speech of school children |

| Quiet, you racist dog. You have freedom of speech, and so do I. The only people that cannot stop it is the government. |

why not? because you disagree with it? the point of freedom of speech is so people with unpopular ideas and ideas the majority disagrees with can still be heard |

I heard recently (from my pastor who heard it from a source who should know what he's talking about, since he knows the president I guess) that there is/was a bill in Congress that was going to restrict/obliterate the freedom of speech. I'm all for free speech. However, I believe that if there's someone being hypocritical or heretical or slanderous, others should help correct this person. |

funny you should say that considering the republican party likes to say they're for "small government" when they aim to do things like expand the military, ban pot, and cut away parts of the constitution |

@hear So because he dislikes liberalism, you automatically assume he's a Republican? Stereotyping to the max. |

| Until either we can have full freedom of speech without it being abused or we can regulate everyone's level of freedom individually, I can't say it's gonna happen. |

| Freedom of speech is a contradiction, you can't say people have freedom of speech but not allow them to say certain things. |

| For all we know, he could've been a conservative from a different country. Or even a libertarian. Besides, by small government the GOP means that they want to reduce taxation from the people. Basically, making it so that the government has less to do with people's rights. |

I believe in the difference of freedom a speech and hate speech. That being said, where the line is between the two is not black and white. Laws, however, do not do nuance. I completely understand why as nuance leads to multiple interpretations, and with that one might question what makes my interpretation the right interpretation. But of course, that is why we have judges so we could agree on an interpretation. When it comes to what a person can say and whether or not it classifies as hate speech, I think that one should look more upon the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law.
I also think that when circumstances (such as war time) change, the laws need to change with it. Justice, as it is, can be seen as both fluid (nuances) and set in stone. Many times freedoms must be exchanged as if you have a set number and as one freedom decreases another inversely increases. I recognize the plight of trying to determine what is best for the people, the country, and the trouble one encounters when the two do not overlap. Many times some freedoms in war time must be compromised so that the country comes out on top in which case you get back those freedoms and, ya know, don't get invaded by a malicious foreign power.
Just my two cents. |
