Okay, so, I'm avid with cartoons and the like. I can formulate an opinion on just about any cartoon you can think of so long as it comes from one of four channels. Cartoon Network, Nicktoons, Toon Disney and The Hub. There's only one thing I don't really care for as an absolute; anime.
But, well, you see, any time I happen to mention I don't particularly like anime, someone's head will poke out from the nearest rock and begin listing five thousand anime I need to watch right here, right now, because it's not like Sailor Moon anymore. So I need to know, in very specific terms, /very/ specific terms, why you like this stuff that every time I watch it seems to be okay at best.
No, this example does not include Avatar or Korra, which are amazing in their own regard. |

First of all, I'd like to know: What anime have you seen? If I am going to answer to this thread, I need to know what your experience with the medium has been.

Thank the gods you didn't say you dislike Evangelion, if you think that is bad just wait and see what these maniacs do to people that criticize NGE. |

| I didn't actually like NGE all that much. It was pretty good up until the last 5 or so episodes where things just got really strange and everybody just seemed to be despairing. |

i don't see how one could think it makes sense to decide an entire medium of entertainment is "okay at best" based on seeing very little
if i saw a few movies could i decide that movies are bad? if i only read a few books, could i conclude "books are not very good"? |

I personally love Fairy Tail. But liking anime is your own personal decision, and If you have watched a lot of it and then don't like it, fine by me. But hating on anime and attacking it and trying to get it gone is not okay, because a lot of people like it and hating on it hurts people. Let them like what they like, and keep angry comments to your self.

I love anime, and I'll jump in to any conversation about anime. I've had many people come up to me both on the internet and IRL screaming in my face that anime is bad, but I'm at the point where I don't care about their opinion. |

@Eguanazor,
It could be the style of art that one might find dissatisfying. |

@gift
The one where Misato kisses Shinji? That's not that screwed up compared to a scene er... Earlier in the same film.

Because it's a matter of personal taste and differing opinions? I mean, there's not really much to say. Why do you need to understand why other people like it? If you don't, that's fine. You're not required to like anything you don't want to. Maybe appreciate some of the good things in it (Studio Ghibli's some really well made stuff). But like it? Of course not.
Like, I can't stand Ed, Edd, and Eddy. On a technical viewpoint, I can see why it was a good cartoon. Characters were well defined, it created its world and followed its rules well, and it had a unique art style not normally seen. But I couldn't stand the characters, the art seemed grimy and ugly to me, and I generally just found it all very boring and even unpleasant to watch sometimes. But I can see why it's still a favored show even years after it's completion, even if I don't feel that way.
For me personally? I got into anime when I was about 12, when Sailor Moon was being shown dubbed after school. It was unlike anything I'd seen. Even with the limited animation budget, a single action, a single look conveyed so much. I loved the emotion, the over the topness of it all while still having so much drama to it. And animes tackled topics that at the time, American cartoons weren't willing to go near in a mature manner (usually when they tried, it was like some kind of after school special), like actual relationships, death, teenage issues. Even in Sailor Moon's butchered dub state, there were interesting things being discussed and brought into the light.
And anime had actual consequences, something that American cartoons usually lacked. Bad stuff might happen, dangerous things might occur, but in the end, everything would be fixed and the status quo would be restored, and everything would go on like normal. Without consequences, there was never any weight to what was happening. What's the point of being invested in an action show and the danger the characters might be in if I know that nothing really bad is ever going to happen to them? Once I realized that anime had some actual weight and danger to characters I cared about, it started to infuriate me that American cartoons hardly ever had that. I wanted to be invested in what was going on, but it hardly ever seemed to matter.
Off the top of my head, the few shows I remember growing up that were willing to take some chances like that were X-Men, Gargoyles, Batman TAS, Superman TAS, and Spiderman (sometimes certain Disney afternoon shows would have a really good episode that took some chances). I mean, it completely blew my mind when in Superman, Darkseid killed Dan Turpin. Just like that. A character had actually been killed, a fairly important character, on a cartoon that kids watched. And he was never going to come back. It had such an impact on me; I cried about it. But also, I was thrilled to no end. It gave me hope that finally, FINALLY, american cartoons were going to give me something that up until that point I only could find in anime. And slowly but surely, more and more we are getting some awesome American shows that tackle mature issues and have real weight to them. The new Thundercats, the Avatar and Korra series, Symbionic (sp?) Titan, etc. It makes me really excited for what's in store.
So yeah. When it comes to funny shows and/or light hearted action shows (Darkwing Duck), Western shows have always done great. I couldn't turn around growing up without finding amazing cartoons to watch that I still love. But when I found that I couldn't find the serious, darker toned stuff that cartoons would hardly ever go near, those became the cartoons I wanted to watch the most. And anime usually filled that void easily. And anime seemed to have all the kinds of american cartoons you would expect to see, but also types of shows you never saw in america. Kids shows, teenage shows, mature shows, comedy shows, mystery shows, horror shows, sci-fi, romance shows, slice of life shows, sitcoms; there's just so much. I still wish American cartoons would drive into more of the genres that anime has been doing for years. |
