Worldwalkers
The world had been fairly normal for awhile there, but something in the grand cosmic tapestry decided to butt heads and now Earth is something of a battlefield for outside forces to meet upon and do battle. Unfortunately they aren't conventional forces, and their method of battle is chaotic and detrimental to the populace of Earth. It's uncertain what these forces are, what they call themselves or why they're fighting, but they come under some pretty clear themes which lets one distinguish between them.
Their primary forces to wage combat involve a kind of 'awakening' process in the humans where they experience a duality of existence: they live as a human, but also as a member of one of the forces at war. Each force seems to have caused an alternate dimension of sorts to fragment from Earth, giving each side a whole Earth of their own to live upon, and from that dimension they launch assaults into Earth itself to fight the forces of the others doing exactly the same.
***Better idea to just cut out the grand cosmicness explanation so the players can discover those mysteries themselves***
Currently there are four primary forces: Angels, Demons, Dead and Nature. Their names practically say everything you need to know about them, but there's a loose alliance of sorts between Angels and Nature, and Dead and Demons; they're all still enemies looking to wipe each other out, but they have preferences.
Angels are obviously the benevolent types, wings of brilliant feathers and grasp of a holier breed of magic of sorts. Demons are about the opposite as you could expect, wings like bats and commands a darker magic more in line with obsidian and flames. Nature covers just about everything that wasn't forged by a human's hand, as people become anything from a strange dryad-like plant person or the closest thing to a were-creature might attain. Dead is merely undead and necromancy, and people of this aspect might not even have flesh, perhaps not even corporeal bodies.
All of this isn't even encompassing the 'Infections': something that tends to happen to those who come in particularly close contact with the Otherworlders -being bitten is a pretty good example, as the forces that are bound up in the Otherworld tends to bleed into normal people like a contagion, mutating them according to theme of the force in their body. Infections from Angels are generally subtle and beneficial, Demons tend to mutate a bit but are also fairly beneficial; Nature tends to cause a lot of eerie issues, as much as the typical 'lycanthropy' disease is emulated quite well, plant infections can have a variety of effects; Dead generally end up with zombification quite plainly though can emulate the vampirism condition too. Although, they quickly discovered a metered dosage of energy from the opposing 'element' counteracts the infection; using Angel extract to fight off a Demon infection, for example, so it's slightly less of an issue.

It was only a month after these dubbed 'Worldwalkers' started appearing, before the world mostly collapsed into a semi-post-apocalyptic state, considering the sudden and overwhelming strain of all these powered up entities appearing literally all over the world and waging war. Some of the Walkers had actually gotten a bit over-zealous and figured out how to break open holes between dimensions to allow the beasts native to their dimension to pour through and wreck havoc.
At any rate, the military poured unimaginable resources into finding away to fight back effectively, and has mainly produced developments to improve their foot soldiers, considering their foes are far too agile and varied for any sort of mechanized defence. Fortunately, not ALL Walkers are consumed by their innate hatred for the other types, it's a bit difficult to overcome for some, as the awakening process grants a bit of knowledge and awareness of the others and with it old hatreds, like they felt like they'd been at war for centuries. At any rate, there are a number whose interests remain with humanity, and band together with the humans to help each other endure this crazy war.

The main options for characters you have is one of the four supernatural races, an infected human or perhaps a regular human in the Earthforce Militia who's been armed to the teeth with pioneer technology intent on leveling the playing field.
The Four possess a common strain of abilities that enable them combat: Dimensional Movement 2p - Their ability to jump between their home dimension and Earth Battle Form 4p/rank - While on Earth their human form is defaulted to, though with some effort they can access their other form that is default in their home dimension -while they are on Earth.
They typically tend to have some abilities available to them even in human form, though they are usually fairly unimpressive and quite subtle in comparison -though still a noticeable level above normal humans. Advanced techniques are also available in regards to their inherent Dimension Travel ability, as more experienced Walkers have been known to pull objects out of some sort of extradimensional storage, or some learn a way to call a beast or animal through the barrier to assist them.
The Infected don't get the luxury of alternate forms to unleash their power when convenient, and are stuck in a sort of limbo as they are both more powerful than a human form Walker, yet are almost always noticeable as supernatural hybrids.
Humans have to rely entirely on devices for supernatural power, though skill may take them a long way.

Glossary: Worldwalker - Those humans who've awakened into the dual-existence and have the ability to traverse between Earth and one alternate dimension of it. Shortened term is Walker. Worldbreaker - A Walker who's lost their humanity in a way, demonstrating unbelievable callousness in their pursuit of destroying their enemies; named for their tendency to literally break a hole between dimensions in order to let monsters and beasts spill out of them to wreck havoc. Shortened term is Breaker. Otherworld - A general term referencing the alternate dimension a Walker has access to. Otherself - Another general term referencing the other half of an awakened human's existence: the default self they are whilst in their Otherworld.
Breakdown: Angels - Gravitate towards benevolence and morality, they're fairly typical angels as far as holiness and light goes. Their Otherworld is Heaven, an eerie and mystical version of earth that has sparse fog constantly lingering everywhere, it's a bit of a paradise in a modernized sort of way with all sorts of grand fantastical structures, the general theme of white and gold.
Demons - Gravitates toward malevolence and amorality, they're fairly typical demons as far as darkness goes. Their Otherworld is Hell, with the light redshifted and lots of obsidian spires and crags all over the place, a rather unpleasant and brutal place.
Nature - Primal is easiest description, they're simpler and don't care for complicated and unfriendly things, as hunting/gathering and sleeping is kind of their niche in life. Their Otherworld is Eden, which says about everything since the entire planet is a jungle paradise -though not all the beasts are as friendly.
Dead - Gloomy, really, as life frustrates them, like sitting too close to a fire or having to deal with a particularly bright light shining right in your eyes; the energy is bothersome and wild, unfriendly. Their Otherworld is the Underworld, which is a bit of a swamp planet of sorts since there's far more water in their dimension that is very similar to the myths of the River Styx.

| It seems months ago the roleplay gods blessed us with someone else's idea. |
