Sources tell @SoccerByIves that U.S. defender/midfielder Geoff Cameron wants to leave Stoke City

Geoff Cameron's absence from the Stoke City squad on Saturday turned heads, but sources tell Goal USA the U.S. national team defender has asked to be transferred.

Geoff Cameron has spent two seasons as a starter for English Premier League side Stoke City, but he may have played his last game for the Potters.

Cameron was left out of Stoke City's 18-man squad for its loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, and while manager Mark Hughes reportedly put Cameron's absence down to post-World Cup rest, sources have confirmed to Goal USA that Cameron has asked Stoke City for a transfer, and is a good bet to leave the club in the coming days.

Cameron has not filed a formal transfer request, but Stoke City appears ready to offload the American defender. The list of clubs interested in Cameron is a sizable one, with teams from Germany to Italy and within the English Premier League in the mix in the U.S. national team defender.

Cameron's desire to leave Stoke City after two seasons stems from wanting to play either as a central defender or defensive midfielder rather than right back, where he has spent the past two seasons with the Potters.

Sources have also told Goal USA that a Serie A team that finished in the top eight last season is among the clubs in the mix for Cameron.

Recent reports have linked clubs ranging from German side Schalke to Premier League clubs Hull City, Southampton and Sunderland as potential suitors for Cameron, and with Stoke choosing not to use Cameron last weekend it appears the team is ready to grant Cameron's request and sell him during the summer transfer window.

Cameron joined Stoke City in the summer of 2012 from Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo on a $2.7 million transfer. He quickly became a regular starter at right back under manager Tony Pulis, and retained that starting role when Mark Hughes eventually took over for Pulis.
