Because people vote for politicians whose plans they support. If helping the poor gets voters, then more power to them. |

Yeah, they give them welfare, but who funds the welfare? The politicians could care less for the poor people, as long as they get their votes.
We live under the misconception that "omg take dis monie pls" will help people. We need to actually help the people establish an income generator, such as jobs, that will give them money, and they will not need to ask the government for help |

What would work better?
First of all, clean up the streets. More cops patrolling areas with higher crime. Better education. Education in poorer areas is garbage.
If you can get the first two done, it would encourage jobs to come in

The problem is that we don't have the money for either of those. |

| republican logic: we're so greedy we need millions of dollars to be happy; poor people don't have money, so let's make them pay all the taxes! |

Because we, uh, don't. But there's an interesting correlation with that one--liberal politicians, the ones who keep welfare and social security around, are the ones who're willing to raise taxes a bit. |

To be fair, if we stop welfare, it'll raise income in the short-term, yes. In the long term, it'll cause unrest. |

I'm not saying remove it, I'm saying reform it. Single, able bodied people should have to work for it. There should be drug tests if there aren't already, and people with a violent criminal history shouldn't get it |

Welfare isn't meant to allow people to live comfortably. It's intended to allow them to get up when they're down and go on to earn their own money from it. |

I'm aware of this. In a perfect world, people wouldn't abuse the system because they're lazy, but oh well. At least the half that actually need it get it. |
