my fortresses always die within the first two years i just can't keep up with the food and alcohol demands of 70 dorfs and if that doesn't get them they die of their own stupidity(falling into a river while pumping water into a cistern for the winter, punching an alligator, FISHING EVEN WHEN I DISABLED THE FISHING LABOR HOW DOES HE EVEN DO THAT, etc. |

That's why I play my modded race. No need for food, drink, or beds. Also they can't drown.

i haven't even hit the caverns yet, lol I'm too busy working on top layer stuff first i set up farms and that's the easy part the hard part is where I stare at the screen for half an hour trying to figure out a perfectly efficient way to dig out the fortress but still it look nice and symmetrical |

@tak Don't knock it 'til you try it. It's both a fantasy world generator and a game. @Mikey Try to produce as little wealth as possible until your farms are able to support hundreds.

@tak Don't judge a book by its cover. Don't judge a post by its cliches.

i'm also very picky about embarks, unfortunately for me I could probably settle in a temperate biome now but I prefer warm temperature in case I can't get a cistern up before late autumn/winter. I also always settle in heavily forested and thick vegetation biomes since i usually use a lot of wood starting off until i hit a sedimentary layer which also usually results in swallowpeople and other animals that will kill my poor dorfs and if there's an aquifer i won't settle there no matter what but anyway, what kind of farm can support hundreds and how can I stop wealth production while still making what my fortress needs to defend itself?(weapons, armor, usually traps) |

The most logical solution: Drawbridges. Make a drawbridge and three mechanisms. Have said mechanisms made by someone without skill in mechanics to minimize their value. Make beds and barrels and make bedrooms as small as possible. Make a still. Grow plump helmets and sweet pods and brew them/eat them. Have a bunch of farmers, and permit harvesting to only them. That should work.

what does the drawbridge have to do with anything also i already make bedrooms just big enough for a bed lol i usually grow only plump helmets since sweet pods can't be grown year round also aren't rock pots better for brewing? |

Good point, I've been going long enough without a need for food that I forgot. The drawbridge is to seal yourself in until migrants arrive, and to defend against sieges.

i don't think i'll be under siege for a while, the closest i've ever got was a kobold thief and a goblin baby snatcher so anyway, make a bunch of plump helmets and sweet pods, seal myself off from migrants, and don't make too much valuable stuff i think my problem before was that i always made at least a fine dining room(according to my dwarfs) and had a statue garden nearby. I also had a bunch of workers churning out crafts, beds, weapons, armor, and stuff |

Yeah, don't churn out items until your farms are powerful. Try to get some Legendary Growers and Legendary Brewers as fast as possible.

Isn't Dust a guy? Either way, Dwarf Fortress spits in the face of cuteness. You can spit now. Instead of having cuteness, you have the ability to butcher kittens.

That's light and soft compared to other stuff. But yes, kittens, like nearly everything else, can be butchered. It's good for the FPS and your totem industry.

Dwarf Fortress's visual graphics are rather poor, but it gives very detailed descriptions. The mental graphics are of the highest quality. Would you rather a game be unplayable due to tens of thousands of cats pathing around the place or kill kittens? If you want to see what terrible things have been done, look up the mermaid bone harvesting project and Obok Meatgod. Those make butchering kittens fairly tame.
