| i'm on debate org and the only reasoning i'm seeing for Puerto Rico not becoming a state is that "they'll lose their national identity" even though they're americans in all aspects except the fact that they're taxed without representation |

they dont want to because of income tax
if they become a state they have to pay income tax, which takes a large portion out of their pay |

i think about 66% or so voted in favor of statehood
it's close, but in the end PR would benefit from becoming a state. |

Puerto Rico is currently treated as an unincorporated territory of the United States of America.
Unincorporated means that there is no local government, which obviously isn't the case for Puerto Rico. On the other hand, the Palmyra Atoll, a territory with no permanent population is considered an incorporated territory.
At the very least, Puerto Rico and maybe some other territories should be moved to the incorporated category. |
