Several companies worldwide are designing solar-electric cargo airships.
Most of them would carry as much cargo as a fleet of semi tractor-trailers in a
single trip. And with zero emissions, and only 1 or two people to fly it. |

Speed's a concern
Same with safety, and if the airship were to be punctured by anything that would be an issue. |

Gasbags are inside an outer tough shell. It would need to be shot with a machine
gun to be an issue. Speed is roughly 100 knots. |

Terrorists don't have an issue getting hold of rockets and missiles that could pierce that.
I'm on board (no pun intended) with the airship idea, just that there's quite a few concerns as well. |

| It would take much to long to transport cargo and what not and probably be shot down more often c; |

It would require hefty security. I think its interesting technology and ideas from
the 1910s is coming back again in the 2010s. |

| Jets are more efficient in the form of speed and safety, plus it'll take a lot of time to get transport companies to make a switch. |

I live near an interstate highway and the semi traffic is horrendous.
Noisy and it destroys the pavement cause they are overweight. |

Alright how's about this;
Airships for international or transoceanic voyages? No (unless it's across a border)
Airships for National flights and transports? All the way, let's see the Amazon zeppelins. |

They could rent space for electric billboards.
Also they could be fitted with water tanks for fighting wildfires. |

| Zeppelins could also be used by tour companies that'll fly over cities for 30 minutes and charge 80 bucks per seat. Yay1!1!1 |

Fun fact: The empire state building's top observation desk was originally designed
as a mooring dock for the Zeppelin airship line. |

| Heres my reasons I think we wont see these soon...1. It would actually take 3 people a pilot and co pilot and a flight engineer 2. If anyone tried blasting it out of the sky they might succed and if a missle, anti aircraft gun defense system was made it would cost loads of money 3.Air ships use helium now and helium is actually leaving earth as we speak (I know it will take a long time for the supply to run out. 4. Expensive not only solar panels but helium, fuel and a possible missle defense system costs a lot. 5. Too slow blimps travel much slower then a airplane and they cant do anything if the helium containing bags air destroyed for this reason we should stick to planes. There starting to fade out 4 engine planes and make more fuel efficient 2 engine planes that are bigger. |

| Cargo airships are one of the cheapest way to transport alot of cargo. But the biggest Contra is the speed, today most things has to be transported fast. |

Like a plane has a kerosene tank, a cargo airship has a helium tank.
Here is 1 more pro and contra:
The cargo airship would cause no pollution then, because it works with a electricity. Another contra would be the safety which isn't very developed yet. |

| A problem is that we may run out of helium within 25-30 years if we keep using it at the current rate. You couldn't have airships then unless you switch to hydrogen, which is flammable and damaging for the ozone layer, or find alternate ways of producing helium, such as nuclear fusion. |

| Its not powered by helium it only gets off the ground by it and it has to have actual fuel for the engine to work. Also weve never had a cargo airship before and a solar electric one is gonna be even more expensive |

Cargo planes aren't cheaper, a turbine costs multiple millions of dollars. |

@bulletshell108 For mass production of airships, the rarity to helium makes it a problem. And unlike petroleum products, there isn't a way to mass produce with our current technology. In addition to this, helium slowly leaks from airships and we would need to replace it.
It is possible to produce small quantities of helium in nuclear power stations through nuclear decay, but you will have a hard time getting enough helium to build an airship and the way people are trying to get rid of fission power plants make this even worse. So, cargo airships couldn't be mass produced until commercial nuclear fusion plants are invented. |
