I can get the Windows for $70 instead of $100 (thank you Microsoft Store student price), the MoBo open box, etc.

@Fd Because then I'm paying more. And most cases in my budget range only had 300W.

>no active PFC >no 80+ certification >two weak 12v rails >12v only provides 516w, not 600w as advertised
get a better power supply. all of the above things suggests poor build quality. |

"80+ certification"
if a PSU doesnt have any form of 80+ it means its generally very poor quality or isnt very energy efficient |

I feel I can trust Thermaltake.
But anyone up to find me a 600W 80+ certified under $60.

power factor control- a feature in most quality PSUs that allows you to use 120V (US) or 220V (EU) input voltage without flipping a swtich. PSUs that have Active PFC can be identified from the lack of a red switch on the back side, and the ones that dont can be IDed by having a red switch.
an 80+ certification means that the PSU will at least acheive 80% efficiency at any load. since you almost always need to use higher quality parts to acheive higher efficiency, this can be used as a quick way to know the quality of a PSU.
these are the 80+ certifications:
80+ 80+ Bronze 80+ Silver 80+ Gold 80+ Platinum 80+ Titanium
80+ is the easiest to get; just have at least 80% efficiency at all loads. 80+ Platinum and Titanium are the hardest to get as you pretty much need 90% or more at all loads. |

you aren't going to get anything really good at $60 for 600w. i either suggest making your build use less power and get a lower wattage yet better built PSU or just spending more on a PSU.
SeaSonic makes pretty good power supplies. Its hard to go wrong with them. |

the thing about PSU brands like cooler master, corsair, and EVGA is that they actually don't manufacture their own PSUs like FSP and SeaSonic does.
its even more confusing with brands like corsair is that they dont use just one guy to make their PSUs as someone like Silverstone does (silverstone mainly uses Enhance Eletronics who makes pretty solid PSUs).
corsair's CX series is known to be pretty mediocre while their AX series is amazing.
this is why the least you can do is judge a PSU based on its series. |

Rose Im not saying that I have a ThermalTake TR2 600W at my disposal right now But I do. And I don't trust it anywhere near my PC. Seriously. Thermaltake is the kind of brand that I find to be really hit and miss. Like. Set up a target 20 feet away, then pick up a handful of gravel and whip it at the target hit and miss. |
