-This would have been the part where I used italics on the "really" in the thread title. But oh well.
IF YOU'RE TOO LAZY TO CHECK THROUGH ALL THIS, READ THE TL;DR BELOW.
The topic I'm about to discuss is definitely not the first of it's kind, but I'm drawing it out in a more technical way than some of the other posts that I've seen.
ROBLOX was originally created with the purpose of building your own game and showing it off to the community. Even now, most ROBLOXians enjoy making some (most likely) small, interesting build or concept, and showing friends to get likes and money.
But as the community becomes more money-driven, as the economy is falling, as BC becomes more enforced, as more and more murder games are still corrupting the front page... is ROBLOX still really a kids game?
We have one side, the majority of ROBLOX - the people that do things on the website or in games.
-They forum. -They earn profit from the TC. -They collect limiteds. -They make ROBLOX products: ads, thumbnails, clothing, basically image design. But most of all: -They play games.
Then we have the game developers of ROBLOX.
I'm not sure on this, but it seems to me that most of the updates ROBLOX has rolled out were specifically driven towards the developers. Sure, these features can be used in multiple ways (at least some of them, like the physics update), more simpler ways at that, but the main portion of them is thrown at the developers, as if to say, "here! add this to your game and make it better."
There's nothing wrong with that, but the more ROBLOX does such a thing, the less interesting updates get to the ROBLOX community. This doesn't really matter much, as new games are constantly being released and topping the front page, but ROBLOX is slowly becoming less and less driven towards the people that play the games.
If ROBLOX is being populated by younger kids but is focusing updates towards the developers, is it truly considered a "kids" game anymore, just because the kids are the majority?
Now, don't get me wrong, I do realize that lua is a scripting language for all ages (well, all ages that can read and write *PROPERLY*), but let's be honest - the typical "kid" nowadays wouldn't want to learn some "stupid script" just to make a game on ROBLOX. They'd be too lazy, or they'd try and think "this is too hard! I give up".
There are definitely a few younger audiences that would love to learn to script, but we don't see many of them releasing anything majorly impressive or taking full advantages of the resources presented to them. If you have any examples, I'm open to discussion, so please feel free to attempt to prove me wrong.
But my point here is, with most of the children that play ROBLOX nowadays only attempting to play games (or do other etc things around ROBLOX), and most of the updates completely neglecting that side of ROBLOX, is it truly a kids game anymore?
To figure that out, you'd have to look at what truly makes a game for a certain age. Is ROBLOX a kids game, because the population and the majority of the game is for kids? Or is it a more intellectual game, because the updates and the majority of productive activity on the game is pointed towards the older people that play the game?
My personal opinion is that it's a mix of both - therefore not making it either. I don't consider it a kids game, but more of a game where both exist as one in the same.
TL;DR: ROBLOX has released more updates for older people but the majority that play are kids. So what kind of game is it?
What do you guys think? If you actually bothered to read through this entire thing (or just read the tl;dr because you're that lazy forumer we all know and love), feel free to leave your opinion.

Why does it matter?
They don't really promote it as a "kids" game anymore.
I think what they meant by a "kids" game was a 13+ game, considering you need knowledge in building and some in scripting. |

@ooh
Does it have to matter to have a discussion about it?
Whether it is doesn't concern me in the slightest bit, but I felt like it'd be an interesting topic to talk about on the forums (and see what the ATRers felt like replying).

I guess kids just play whatever game is "fun" for them and ignore all the updates. |

I doubt that ROBLOX themselves considers it a kids game anymore, but I'd be interested to see their opinion 'bout it either way

| <--- 10 year old. I'm not so sure about being a kid's game anymore. I want to learn how to script. I am a beginner at building (especially cars). I'm pretty sure I can never get to the front page. EVER. And every game is so complex I am not even sure how anything is done. |

The only sad part about being this age is knowing that kids my age have kids of their own already like what I can barely keep virtual fish alive without cheat codes

| I wouldn't call ROBLOX a kids game. I'd say it is a game, and game development platform, for all ages, that is safe for kids. |

@cug For most people nowadays their parents are stopping them because they have to go to bed or it's time for dinner or something. Not trying to be stereotypical but it's true
And then they get bored and just forget about it

Stop bumping this
Most people could care less if this was a kids game, they think it is fun, and that is good enough |

| I would love to learn how to script but i'm not a kid technically if you consider 15 to be kid,I have been playing on Roblox for almost 1k days and I have seen them push the focus towards the developers. Can you blame them? Roblox is a site were people can make a game and give it to the masses,if those masses are for people 5 years of age or 16 years of age.Should kids really be seeing games about you killing someone for points, depends but at least they are playing this instead of going out and playing games like GTA,Battlefield,or Call of Duty. |

I'm a kid. I can do a lot of things that adults do except for script and a few other stuff, but anybody can do anything on Roblox so it's for all ages.
Btw, I'm just guessing my post is relevant, didn't read. |

It's designed for kids, but ROBLOX doesn't mind if 68 year old men play with their 8 - 10 year old players and communicate.
