This is a first person story from the perspective of a soldier against a Vaktovian invasion. ________________________________________________________________________________ I breathed in quietly. The city was eerily silent on this day. As I stood from my perch, I remembered innocent children playing outside not only but a few months ago. Smiling faces and light laughter ringing through the streets as our world reveled in bliss. It changed. Although none of us wanted it, we all knew it was coming. We just didn’t know when. I looked into the distance absorbing the place I grew up, where I raised my first and only son in. The streets were silent. The children and the elderly were now underground in dark tunnels, as their parents remained on the surface preparing for the worst. The battle that would determine our fate as a race. The war against Vaktovians. Last month I sat with my family at the dinner table to eat. The mother of my ten-year-old son set tasteful dishes down in front of us. My son sat looking at his plate immobile. I started eating avoiding eye contact from both of them. The food didn’t help the growing knot in my stomach. I didn’t thank her for dinner that night. I didn’t ask my son how he was doing at his academy. I couldn’t take seeing the pain in either of their eyes, the unmistakable fear that lay ahead. After we got our drone to clean the dishes, we all decided to head to bed early. I climbed into our weightless bed and shut my eyes. I felt her crawl into bed silently beside me; she was quiet while thinking I was asleep. I was anything but asleep, my mind was racing and my heart was thumping. I had so many unanswered questions. I didn’t want this war. I regretted not making the most out of that night, the last night I had with my family. Now the demons have arrived- and they were early within galactic proximity. I clenched onto my armor. It was made of the finest and most sturdy material. I had spent all my fortune to buy my family the safest suits. I fled down the shelter's tower into the tunnels with my partner breathing heavily at my side. When we reached our son's block, he wasn't there. “Adam, do not worry, he's most likely with the matron, I'll leave my post to find them." She said with an unconfident, yet reassuring voice as she looked me in the eyes. I nodded briskly as we parted and I headed out onto the field, where our commander screamed hysterical orders. He knew this could be the last day for us all. The alarms continued, following gut-wrenching screams of fear and panic from inside the tunnels. We all focused upon the skies. The night sky was full of black specs, like tiny black bugs blotting out the sun, masking the blue. As my eyes adjusted to the dark I could make out a body sprawled on the concrete. It was a dog, its neck snapped the other way. I pretended not to see him as I glided on through the chaos. My ears were ringing from the sounds of blasts and bullets aimed at the sky. I ran through countless debree and destroyed properties. It was getting harder to breathe with all the smoke. In the distance, I could make out a massive aircraft carrier. On it marked a faded red, black and white symbol. Light was provided from the fallen streetlights, crumbling skyscrapers and fires that rolled through the streets like stampedes. As I reached the top of our hill, I realized another fire had started and made its way into the street. I started to head the other way when I noticed a young child standing dangerously close to the fire. She cried out for her mother, lost and hopeless. She must have wandered out of the underground tunnels in an attempt to find her parents. I felt chills go down my spine as I shuddered. What if that was my child out there, lost and alone. Immediately I run towards the child. I wouldn’t let the girl get scorched by the flames. “Come here, you're in a dangerous place!” I roared after her. She ignored my words and headed towards the epicenter of the flames when she stopped mid stride. I caught up to her and followed her wide gaze. Explosions rattled the earth, these weren't missile due to their lack of combustible power, these were monsters that glided from the dark skies onto our land. In World War 2, unlike the soldiers of that era, these monsters had no parachutes, they darted from their ships with no precautions and terraformed the land they hit. They devastated where they landed. Armed citizens and soldiers quickly retaliated against the onslaught, sacrificing numbers and ammunition. A red essence beamed from their inhuman bodies as they charged our lands with their guns and blades. The child fainted at the sight, allowing herself to be engulfed by the flames. I stepped over rubble and over holes left by straggling bullets. I ran through the street when I stumbled over something. I hit the concrete and I stared back at what caused me to fall. Out of all possibilities.. It was my son. He was curled into fetal position. He sputtered my name as blood ran down his chin. I felt my stomach churn as I sat down next to him, comforting him. I focused into his eyes and not his wounds, stroking his blood-matted hair. “Dad.. I wanted to make you proud of me” My son coughed, while choking on his own blood. A knife slipped from his hands. It was my combat knife. It was all clear to me now. Tears clogged my vision. I never told him how much I loved him last dinner. I never looked him in the eyes. He wanted me to appreciate him. I began to weep with my son in my arms until I realized he had stopped breathing. I lost myself in this moment. I saw corpses litter the ground. Suddenly, I felt excruciating pain in my abdomen. I fell to the ground in shock as I felt myself being dragged by what only could be Vaktovians. I blacked out. I awoke to darkness in a damp, hollow room followed by desperate screams. I felt sweat trickle down my face. Two of them pinned me down as the other stood over me. I could not make out its eyes, or if it was male or female. As far as I knew, there were no genders. I knew this was it. This is where my life ends. “Why?” I asked in a choked voice. "Why!? You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.” The Vaktovian almost crooned, before fixing its gaze upon me. Before I could even imagine what that meant, something was pumped into my heart and I lost consciousness. _________________________________________________________________________________ -Thanks to xXxRaPPeRoxXx for his help. |

Cool story. I love the ending, even though it was saddening.
Some criticism, it needs some more "action-y" moments, such as the last few paragraphs.
9/10 overall.
Nicely done. |

| Good detailing, and the inevitable death and agony that he is forced through was done right. |
