| For anybody who is learning Chinese, buy this book. It gives you base words for loads of different characters and uses all cute images with charcters on top to help understand. Learnt the whole book in ten days, really good for anybody here studying the subject for school :) |

Chinese isn't a language [2]
There is Cantonese and Mandarin, not Chinese. |

Zhug: China is ideologically different from the United States. However, I do recall that Deng Xiaoping said 'To get rich is glorious', which may tend towards a capitalist trend.
Diamondmark: I would usually use a Radical Chart for common radicals such as ’ネ used in 神、礼’, ’巾 used in 帽、帳’, or ’氵 used in 清、涽’. I do recommend reading simple books written in Mandarin, especially newer edition with Pinyin pronunciation guides. It is best to start learning simple phrases, words, and the sort, with the eventual goal of being able to read a Chinese newspaper. Your idea of reading a book would be very helpful to those who would like to learn Chinese as an additional language.

| Sorry, I meant its mostly a pictorial book teaching how to write. I think everybody in China writes in the same language (pretty much), they just say quite a few words differently. |

By my experience, there is one way to learn a language; the hard way.
Ultimately, the only way for you to become extremely proficient in a language in a short amount of time is to move to said country and immerse yourself so that you are forced to apply your knowledge on a daily basis.
By the way, do you plan on learning Traditional or Simplified? If you plan on going to Taiwan/Hong Kong, I'd recommend the former. |
