[REF] DrCherry's thread: http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=139335235
I have received quite a bit of flak from people about me not working on A3 hard enough, and even more inquiries into when A3 will be released. I had mistakenly assumed that others would be able to understand more about game development, but I am at fault for that -- game design is my field of expertise, and I'm so comfortable with it that I assumed it was an easy concept to grasp.
I'd like to start out with the fact that I'm only a human. Just because I can script does not make me a god, and just because I can program does not mean I can instantly complete something. There's a reason people go to college to learn how to program -- it isn't a simple feat. In addition to that, ROBLOX is not 100% of my life. I have a job, I'm finalizing my preparations for college, and believe it or not, ROBLOX is not my perfect idea of a social life -- I spend time with real people in the real world just like any other person. This goes for every programmer -- we aren't robots -- we're human beings just like you.
Now that's out of the way, we can get into the issues with A3.
I believe one of the biggest issues is that people think that what we have now is the product of 2 years' work, but this isn't the case. However, again, I'm at fault for not clarifying this earlier. What I have currently came into production on June 7th, 2014. I had to scrap everything Unclear had because he programmed it with a "Get it done ASAP so I can get paid" attitude (which is why the guns were broken by a ROBLOX update.) Unclear also started from scratch, because before Shadow got good at UI design, /UW9kQnV.jpg was what A3 looked like. So no, Alianor 3 has not been consistently developed for 2 years straight. (Just an FYI, I fixed the first person issue broken by the ROBLOX updates, as well as the crouch that was broken by another ROBLOX update.) In addition, I'm programming A3 to be compatible with FilteringEnabled, which makes it much more difficult to develop, but in the end it will be worth it. Although FilteringEnabled itself probably doesn't mean much to you, a fort that won't become an exploiter playground whenever the next exploit carnival begins does. Alianor 3 will be a quality fort -- not some fort with scripts randomly stitched together in hopes that they would work. A3 is taking so long because I'm going the extra mile, and am ensuring that it will continue to be enjoyable for years to come.
Another prevalent issue is that people seem to think that A3 was almost done -- around 95% done if you heard the same thing I did. However, there are two huge issues that I should have cleared up earlier but didn't. The first being that 95% was not judged by a scripter, but rather by a builder. In case you haven't picked up on the issue here, any completion percentage generated by someone in another field of expertise than the content being judged is going to be way off the mark. 95% is a bit over the top, and a more correct number would be around 70%. The second issue is that Alianor 3 was neither 95% nor 70% close to being completed -- the BETA was 70% done. In case you need an example of a beta, head on over to Venezia -- that's in beta right now. If you haven't already checked out Venezia, you'll learn that 70% until the beta can even begin is not even a decent completion percentage at all. People keep telling themselves that it's almost done, including someone I work very closely with, and after repeating that to themselves so many times, they come to believe that it's actually almost done, and completely lose track of everything else they're doing.
I'd also like to take the time to clear up another issue. I see HCOM has called my bluff that I'd ban them from the Hub/A3 if they server flooded again, etc -- stating that Sonic was a candidate for that punishment probably made that a dead giveaway. I don't like playing the bad guy, but neither do I like sitting idly by and letting great things rot away. Andrew Lee was kind enough to point out that my opinions don't have any significance because I'm not in HCOM, so I have to resort to stunts like threatening to ban people from A3, leaving FEAR, etc to have a say in particular matters. Also keep in mind that I have a patience just like any other person, and that it's worn thin on a daily basis by under-qualified people applying for ATC, people asking me to take time off from A3 to script things for them (I'm not just referring to random PMs I get either -- I'm also including the HR Island you all visited on the 4th, namely the dragon, some bits and pieces of DRagon's training facility that he's working on, the complete revamp of Terra for Disav0w's FMA exams, the numerous patches I pushed out to A2A and A2, etc), and a variety of other things that happen in FEAR -- politics is tough stuff to put up with, especially being a person who likes to get straight to the point. Having things happen like DrCherryTop posting the thread that he did (http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=139335235), being completely ignored just because I'm not in HCOM, and being asked to devote more time to something that I already devote most of my free time to really pushes that patience that I have -- it was extremely difficult for me to keep my cool while typing up this thread.
To end this, I'd like to ask that despite the numerous threads, motions, etc to have me exiled from FEAR, I don't ask for someone to be exiled, but rather that DrCherryTop not be reprimanded for publicly complaining about the A3 issue rather than contacting me directly -- he's already been punished enough with the six times he's been exiled from FEAR :P |

Projectile weapons and/or raycast won't function with FilteringEnabled.
Is it going to be swords only?

| Raycasting and projectiles most certainly do work with FilteringEnabled -- if it's not working for you, then you're doing it wrong. Try firing a RemoteEvent and have them execute from the server. |

"Arke started deving about 2-3 months ago" "Apathy started deving over 3 months ago"
Keep in mind that I started less than a month ago -- I haven't been developing for 2/3 straight months, so it's no surprise I'm not releasing A3 with Arke and Apathy. |

So you anticipate wiring the potential thousands of rays to RemoteEvents and firing them from the server...
Not only is that putting a lot of faith in the client, it's going to be a hefty workload (especially considering even <30 humanoids can generate lag alone). I would say CSG will help with some of the weight, but how large are you estimating the servers and city to be?

"Not only is that putting a lot of faith in the client"
Considering that in every gun located in every current group fort gives the client 100% control of the raycasting, damage, etc of the guns (basically everything), I'd imagine that giving them control over one thing can't be any worse. In addition to that, all the client has power over is the position their mouse is over. If they want to exploit that, then they can go for it, because that updates every 1/60th of a second, and even if they freeze the value without being kicked out of the game by ROBLOX, if the position isn't a valid position, the raycast from the barrel of the gun to that position won't reach its target.
"it's going to be a hefty workload"
Only firing a remote event when a bullet needs to be shot isn't a heft workload. I'm using remote events for almost everything (FilteringEnabled sort of requires that) in a massive total of two scripts, and the highest intensity reached by either one of them in the Script Performance window is < 0.1%, so I doubt I'll run into any issues.
"(especially considering even <30 humanoids can generate lag alone). "
If humanoids are lagging your game, you have a serious issue. |

| We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive. |

A typo on my part, when I mentioned the humanoids I intended to say humanoids with the weapons (which is why I go to mention CSG later). I've experimented with the balance with detailed guns and players, and even with 30-brick guns I have to compensate with 900 moving parts per 30 player server. Do you plan to fall back on CSG (which is intended for release weeks from now)?
Furthermore, could you answer my previous inquiry on how large you estimate the city to be?
Thanks again.

Each weapon is ~60 parts, so we're banking on CSG. It's already shipped, but we're just waiting on mobile now. I have no doubt in my mind that it'll be released by the time A3 is done.
For your question about how big A3 is, I can't give you an exact distance -- you'll know just as much I do by looking at the trailer, but if you were referring to part count, it's around 30k. I get 20fps right now, but in the end if Shadow lets me do LOD and whatnot on the map, I can easily make it to where everyone gets 60 fps at A3 -- otherwise, we're screwed and A3 will end up like Cyro. If that happens though, I have a Plan B to remedy the situation. |
