Name: Mattin "Matt" Kreith
Weapons: Blunderbuss, Dress Sword & Rigging Knife
Ship: Single-Masted Catboat (Broken Bowsprit & Jib) "Elan"
Gold: 1000g
Crew: 15

Mmmmm-CRACK!! Rumble, rumble.

Lightning surrounds you, as you grab the wooden railing of your ship, cling to the railing as if it were your only life line. It may possibly be.

CRACK!

The storm deepens, as water from the sea and the sky embeds itself into you. It seems you have as much blue below you as you have atop you. The only interruption to the constant rumbling of thunder and cracks of lightning is your crew around you, bilging out water and putting out fires as a handful of imps mercilessly prey on your ship, preying in with their tridents on your crew, lifting them up and dropping them into the drink.

The situation seems dire. Your single-masted sloop is being tossed around by the sea like a tennis ball in a tennis match and the conditions and imps are preying on your crew and nerves like a thousand blows to the stomach.

C-CRACK!

A lightning strike smashes into your bowsprit, completely dismembering it, causing your jib to fall loose. Your sloop isn't a sloop anymore. It's a catboat. Not an improvement when your ship isn't designed for it.

You stumble around on your raised quarterdeck, trying to keep a bearing on your balance-- with the sea tilting your ship extreme degrees at a time, it's hard to know where is down.

The ship's wheel somehow finds itself in your hands, turning around as the rudder gets tossed around like a ragdoll in the ocean. A little bit of nervous strength seems to be enough to pry it from the ocean's grip, giving yourself control of your ship... Or the direction it sails in, atleast.

Your quartermaster rushes up to you as he notices you grabbing the wheel--

"Sir! You're back! Ye've taken quite the tumble a moment ago! We thought ye's were out for good!" he says, as you watch a member of your crew help someone out of the water-- presumably put there by a wave or an imp

"I uhh--..." you murmur incoherently

"Sir! There's no time to lose! The men are having a hard time keeping her topside top! What're yer orders? We have the sea to worry about, the lightning and the imps. It isn't looking good for the Elan!" he says

What'll you do, ol' Captain?

"Furl the mainsail! Secure all the cargo! I need someone up front who can tell me where we're going! If there's anything we don't need, CUT IT LOOSE!"

Matt was determined to make it out of this. He braced himself against the wheel, trying to keep the ship on course.

Your men run around the ship feverently, hauling down the mainsail by it's halyard and tying it to it's boom. The rest of the men all work to splice lines to get all the cargo and loose bits to the deck and other bits.

Some men were picked up by the imps, tossed overboard again as they worked against the hellish sea itself to get back to the Elan.

The sea was incredibly strong, tossing the ship to extreme degrees of near 90-degrees, where the crew hung on for dear life by the railing.

As time weathered on, more imps came to the ship, making life even harder for your crew. Though the storm seemed to get ever so slightly lighter... Or perhaps you're simply getting used to it?

What'll you do now, sir?

Your crew all look around for some useable gunpowder. After a few moments your quartermaster comes back to you, saying:

"Aye sir, we have quite a few bags of useable gunpowder below deck sir." he says, turning around from you quickly to draw his blade to fight against an imp diving down onto him.

"Then grab your muskets, and we'll get rid of these things! First mate to the helm! Bos'n, get these men some weapons and get them organized!" Matt draws his sword and aims a horizontal slice at the imp attacking the quartermaster.

The men take up arms and everyone begins the ship-wide defense against the flying invaders.

Your strike again the imp is quickly blocked by the imp's small trident, your blade being caught in between two of his tines. However, with the situation turning from a one on one to a two on one, the imp is quickly overwhelmed by your quartermaster and yours attacks, where his defense becomes amiss and your quartermasters lets a cutlass through the imp's stomach.

During your fight, you hear muskets fire off in the distance as shot flies through the air into the devils, your men lining up volleys at the coordination of your bosun. While the ship is getting tossed about recklessly, your men's spirits don't seem to be dampened at all.

The storm is continuing to lessen, and your situation with the imps is only improving. If all goes well, you should be able to maintain control of your ship shortly.

What'll you do afterwards, captain? Hoist sail and get moving or wait til the last bit of storm is out of the way?

Once we can bring the ship under control again, make for the coast, if we can, and drop anchor to try to repair some of the damage with planks and other scraps. First, make sure the imps are in retreat.

You continue fighting alongside your men until the imps begin to wear down; either through killing or their retreat. It isn't long before the only worries on your men's mind are the weather, which is admittedly beginning to let up to a reasonable point.

At a word, your men begin to hoist sail, getting the only operating sail up into the wind. The ship, in catboat trim, proves quite difficult to steer without it's jib. The keel was made with a jib in mind, and it's used to so much wind pressure being centered on the aft part of the ship. Though your navigating seems to be well enough to get the ship underway. You head for the coast.

The men begin working on repairing the ship-- mostly they are working on repairing the bowsprit. A few men delegate themselves to the special repair of this component.

After the storm, it seems you have lost three men and are now down to an outfit of twelve men.

The ship carries on it's way towards the coast.

The quartermaster approaches you with a smile, likely impressed at how well you handled the situation.

He begins "Hello cap'n. Just to refresh your memory. Your ship, the Elan, is a single-masted sloop. It carries four cannons, each of twelve pounds shot a piece. It's easily operable by few men and quite small-- though that also makes it incredibly maneuverable and quick. I trust you'll be able to use the ship to it's strengths. Just reminding you, captain." he says, walking off.

After a couple hours, the repair on the bowsprit reaches it's intermediate stages. Meanwhile one of your men points out to you that theres an unfamiliar sail on the starboard bow.

It seems to only be one ship with only one mast. Not many details past that can be determined.

What'll you do?

Hoist the colors of our employing nation, and see how the other vessel responds.

Your crew hoists the colours of Fragni, your small homeland.

The other ship does nothing for a few moments, then turns towards your ship and seems to be on a direct course to meet your ship.

You have difficulty making out what nationality the ship is from until a few minutes of spyglassing the other ship's mast. The ship seems to be from Spalifsh. An entirely neutral nation to you. It's a relatively new nation as well.

Upon even closer inspection the enemy ship seems to be a well-sized cutter with six cannons, though they seem to be a bit deficient in the manpower area.

What'll you do?

Let them come to us. Keep the cannons ready in case of attack, but do not show any outward signs of hostility.

The foreign ship sails towards you at a steady pace. You notice as they get closer that the ship is well maintained and has quite a bit of cargo aboard, but the folk aboard simply couldn't be more than 10.

The foreign captain waves you down and turns his ship around to match your direction. He shouts out to you, explaining his actions;

"Oh, a friendly face! Such a rarity! I was simply looking for a friendly face to get some safe travel to an island. I'm a bit lost!" he explains in a bit of embarassment.

Matt does not let his guard down, though he does put on a smile. "That's understandable. Bad winds out here of late. Where were you headed?"

"We were headed home, actually, though the crew and I have been out here a week longer than we want. We'll take any dry land at this point thats inhabited by more than a few folk." He says with a laugh, as he takes a few navigation tools from his quartermaster whom is clearly identifiable as a reptilian humanoid. He has scales and A large, hard tail. They're a fairly rare race to be sea-faring these days, though they're incredibly gifted on their feet.

You find that you're not much further out than two days away from Niemen, a large maritime town based in a relatively large cluster of islands closely grouped together. There are also tons on the other islands, but none come close to the sheer size, wealth and population of Niemen.

Matt checks briefly with the other captain to make sure that they can stop there. If so, he makes ready to sail.

The other captain agrees to go to Niemen happily. Both yours and his men make the sails ready and you begin sailing together towards Niemen. You notice that due to the Elan's hull and it's relatively shallow, semi-planing design, it is significantly faster than the other captain's cutter. Though your crew lets the wind out when the Elan is too far ahead of the other cutter.

A day passes and you notice yet another ship on the horizon, though it seems the friendly captain already has all the details on the ship. Perhaps he saw it before. He tells you: "It's a double-masted schooner. Doesn't seem to have too many guns. Maybe only 8. It's a Yunkin."

Yunka. The war nation. The nation that spends all it's extra trade profits on new war ships and training. They're incredibly hostile.

If the vessel is hostile, which there is almost no doubt in his mind that it is, Matt tells the other captain to appear as if his ship has been captured or scuttled in some way. Make it appear to not be a threat and wait for the Elan to circle around the enemy vessel and make a distraction.

Have our own men load the cannons, have ship-to-ship weapons on hand, and fortify the hull and the stores.

While the friendly captain has a worried look on his face and questions your actions, explaining his point; "I agree we should have a distraction, but my ship has more guns than yours. Wouldn't it be more effective for my ship to be the initial attacker?" he states

Meanwhile, your men work diligently to ready the cannons and arming the men with the tools needed to sail and load the cannons quickly. Silently word travels around the ship of a possible engagement and everyone is awake and ready to go.

"I suppose," Matt replied to the other captain, "however, I was thinking in terms of speed."

How close is the potentially hostile ship, currently?

The friendly captain tips his hat with a smile at the new plan. His crew jumps to the ready to ready their cannons and get ready for some shake down maneuvers. You see his ship sail away from your quickly, making it seem to the enemy like you two were not associated and were simply passing by.

The Elan is completely battle ready. The enemy ship is now roughly a mile and a half away. If you wish to set up a ruse, you're free to do so, though the enemy is distinctly headed for you, the "seemingly" weaker target.
