Imagine a breezy day WW1 Adolf serving in the German military known as the Axis powers. He was a messenger and was exposed a lot. One day there was someone in his sight. The man didn't pull the trigger. WHAT IF he did. Who would want to be that guy...

| National Socialist party would still have existed, because Heetler joined AFTER it formed. He was simply an outstanding spokesman that could rile up the people like no other politician. Had he been killed in WWI, I doubt the Party would have gained power so fast, if at all. WWII might have still happened if the party did gain power, maybe even more successfully for Germany, since Heetler stalled a lot of plans his generals had, and decided to invade the USSR. That's just one of many, many possible outcomes if he had died before he got the chance to join the National Socialist Party, |

| Someone had the chance to kill heetler. The person whom had the chance had mercy and decided not to kill him. That's an opportunity missed. |

@Manch
A British sniper during WWI had him in his sights, but he pitied him and decided not to shoot.
If that guy lived to see WWII, I wonder how he felt.. |

@Casper
Mussolini would still be around, so the fascist influence in Europe would still be strong if Mussolini helps the Nationalists win in Spain and encourages the Fascist movements in other European countries. |

| And that "joke" you call Mussolini is the one that kickstarted fascism in Europe as it was the origin of the political movement. Italy might have been weak when compared to our timeline's Germany, but if Germany's Fascist parties hadn't taken control as quickly as they did I could see the Italians being the ones that build up their military to massive numbers and support underground far-right movements in other nations. |

| That's true, but in school you don't learn HALF as much about Mussolini than you do about Heetler. |

You're putting what happened in our timeline with what WOULD have happened. If Heetler never became spokesperson, the Fascist movement in Germany would have had a lot more trouble trying to gain power and would have likely been heavily supported by Italy, and the Communists would have had a bigger chance at gaining power. What I could see happening is a civil war on the scale of the Spanish civil war, the far left supported by the USSR vs. the far right supported by Italy.
Italy's ambitions were also to create a new Roman Empire, but they never truly did since Germany had most of the Axis muscle. If Italy had been the one to increase the military size and spending, etc, I could see Mussolini being the one to attempt to annex the former Roman provinces, starting in the Balkans. |
