AC4 - Pirate game
AC3 - Crappy game, story, parkour, setting, combat
Brotherhood I can understand, but I don't understand how those ones are so far up your list |

Not enough buildings for fluid parkour
The setting was pretty uninteresting aside from the natural landmarks.
Combat was easy mode, too many gadgets, not enough reason to use them.
Why use smoke bombs when I can just shoot and counter kill everything?

Have to admit I think Assassins Creed II was the title I anticipated most out of all the games, it was a huge jump from what we knew of the original Assassins Creed, loved the setting, story (Initially, but I got bored of it quickly) and game play.
If say you didn't get into Assassins Creed II with the expectation of the first game I can see why people didn't receive it so well, but at the time...
My top Assassins Creed game list (When I was first playing or just got into them):
1. Assassins Creed II 2. Assassins Creed III 3. Assassins Creed Revelations 4. Assassins Creed Brotherhood 5. Assassins Creed
Haven't played AC4, don't include Unity either obviously as that's not out.
And yeah most might be surprised to see III so high up in a list, it didn't meet expectations obviously and was nothing like it was hyped up (By Ubisoft, not fans) to be. Ubisoft were optimistic of what fans would find interesting, it tried to ask the larger questions and didn't have such a one sided perception of events, both things which most others just found boring or didn't even understand when it wasn't just in their face. Then they also had a character who wasn't as transparent and flamboyant like Ezio that most people were already used to. Although even with all this said Ubi often ended up making many contradictions in their own story and characters, they were optimistic to try and pull it off.
They should've used this ending for AC3 really, it wasn't included in the final game (Spoilers, obviously): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6d79JHh3cU
I mean, it's much more thrown in the face as I said but it's also much more powerful which I would say is at least acceptable for an ending, yet I imagine they used the other ending with Connor limping on his own at the homestead as a metaphor for how he has now become exactly like Achilles.
No but seriously watch that video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6d79JHh3cU |

| I just realized from reading my post that I got so drawn up in talking about AC3 that it diminished the rest of my post :( |

I noticed the how the game blurred the lines between templars and assassins and that was actually the part I loved most about the game.
But, it didn't make up connor's bland character. Yes, I know the natives didn't show much emotion, but it still made him uninteresting.
That video in your post was great, and if it was in game, I might've thought better of connor, but from what I was shown in game, they tried to portray him as deep and thoughtful, but ended up with him being a meathead who doesn't even consider the issue at hand before he shoves a blade down some guy's throat. |

Yeah I'll agree somewhat with what you're saying about the meat head part, although not so sure it's the right way of putting it.
I think part of it 'was' actually intended, Connor was always presented to be an outsider and as such he was incredibly naive, he overestimated those he initially supported looking at the world in this one sided perception that is a key topic of the game, yet obviously Haytham comes along and shows all the faults of his character, everywhere he has gone wrong and as such 'blurring' the lines as you may put it.
Juno pretty much sums it up perfectly near the end of the game, what he strives for does not exist, and it presumably never will because people will never be perfect. |
