tl;dr: roblox devs dropped the ball on the whole "player points" thing because you can't climb the leaderboards except through underhanded means not based on player skill
From what I understand, Player Points are supposed to be a means to allow players to find accomplisment through playing the games of others, giving players a long term goal to work for. How it is implemented leads to it not accomplishing its goals, as you do not need to actually play to earn points. It has already become a broken system, as people are using it not to measure player skill and climb the leaderboard through effort, but are using it to buy their way to the top of the leaderboards, with "what gives the most player points" being more important than "is the game fun" when deciding what to play.
Problem 1: There are no uses/sinks for points, and points do not decay, so it will inevitably be impossible to climb the leaderboard.
Quite simple - because there is no way to lose points, you cannot move down on the leaderboard; someone simply moves above you. And let's face it, any ranking past a certain point doesn't matter. It's like getting 4th place in an Olympic event - you did not even get a medal. When everyone is at a flat 0 points, this is not an issue. When people start pulling ahead, future users will look at the impossible climb and simply give up.
In fact, in this week alone, some people have "earned" 22 million points. 220 thousand before the 100x multiplier for this part of the beta testing. Most actual games that aren't simply point vending machines (see below) don't give that many points.
Solution: Allow points to be spent on some sort of reward so that players who don't get to the top of the leaderboards can have some accomplishment, have points decay if enough new points are not earned, implement some goals (badges - hey, remember that system that you haven't touched in about five years?) such as top 10% of points earned in the last month so there's something tangible to work towards.
Problem 2: People are paying to win points through game passes and such.
This defeats the purpose of playing the games to earn points. If you can simply throw robux at the money-grubbing place owner to get their points, you're not earning them, you're buying them. With there being no point sinks, the "leaderboards" simply become a financial arms race of who has the most disposable income. And there are also instances of game passes being used to boost how many points one receives.
Solution: Ban and take away all points from people that either use such services or offer such services, and take away all robux from the point sellers. If there is clear evidence that an alt account is being used to circumvent the punishment (a large amount of robux being exchanged through trade or buying an item such as a shirt), ban and remove all robux from all guilty parties. It's akin to gold sellers in other MMOs - it should not be allowed.
Problem 3: There's no reason to be outstanding at a game, to play any game that does not give points, or to make content yourself (at least when dealing with player points).
Right now, any method for earning player points from games is automated, and for good reason - it would be impossible for the owners to give everyone points manually. There is no way to get extra points for playing very well beyond what the owner thought of, there is no reason to play games that don't give player points despite how good you may be at it, and there is no reason to make content outside of a game because you can't earn points from it.
Solution: Allow players to give others their player points, and add some rewards for those willing to give their points. In fact, this would allow players who have successfully finished their climb to pay the points forward.
Problem 4 (coming from solution 3): Someone could use bots to farm points to sell them to people.
Solution: See solution 2, except applied to point farming bots. The segment regarding alternate accounts would become especially important in this scenario. |

Luckily, there is a punishment for those who sell Player Points; they can't use DevEx.
So they (point sellers) can make millions of robux, but it won't mean anything. They'd just be stuck with a bunch of virtual cash, and no way to turn it into real money. |

1st off....nice, well thought out thread/post.
2nd....Roblox is allowing Points to be sold and the creators of these PP only games CAN use DevEx so long as their robux were not obtained through fraud.
3rd....I offer a solution.
I think a place should not start receiving PP rewards to be given out until they reach a minimum place visit number, say 10,000 to ensure it is a real game and not a PP game. Roblox will have to come up with some method to stop the PP farms. |

| They did this to get people to actually play games not these town and city ones all the time, actual action games that require skills. It also has competiveness which makes people want to get the points, no matter if they are useless. They could also be used for roblox currency conversions. |
