In my own mind it seems blatantly obvious as to why we should keep firearms. But obviously for the notion of gun control to exist there has to be some pretty solid reason.
My view on it is that guns exist whether we like it or not, and banning them won't magically remove them from criminals. So we need to have them for defense. As for the school shootings and stuff that I definitely think needs to be handled but in the way of simply making sure gun owners are not morons who let their kids near their guns.
I also firmly believe that we need them so that if the need ever arose, we could re-install a tyrannic or corrupt government. I saw earlier on a thread someone say that we probably wouldn't need such force on the government. Probably is not good enough.
I have also seen some debate on open carry laws and people saying it is unnecessary and stupid to take a gun into a store. I completely disagree with that and in my personal opinion a responsible gun owner should take his gun everywhere he can. I don't own a gun yet and I tell you what I feel a lot safer in any situation when I know there is a responsible firearms owner nearby. Police and military are not everywhere.
Anyhow, this is most of my view on the subject and I would appreciate knowing yours. Also note that I am asking for only personal opinion so try to keep it that way.
Sorry for the horrible way this is typed. I'm on my tablet so it's a bit harder.

| despite taking the liberal stance on most social matters, im a firm believer in constitutional rights. that being said, i think that people should be able to own firearms. of course there should be regulations, such as not being able to own some ridiculous weapon and carry it around in public. |

I really don't think that taking away guns will solve anything. Like you said, criminals will still find ways to get them. These are the same criminals who are the ones sneaking into people's houses for robberies, but now, the citizens can't defend themselves.
It's going to make things worse imo.

| I think people should have the right to own a firearm but they should pass a background check. |

| There should be no regulations on firearms and arms excluding missiles and bombs. |

@dav
Whether you like it or not, criminals will have guns. You can sit still and be shot or use guns correctly. I don't want protection from guns, I want protection from criminals.
@anyone
Also by gun control i am referring to more rigorous practices of it.. control over firearms of course is good or every idiot has a gun. |

| Any current law concerning the limiting of certain firearms, such as machine guns and weapons considered artillery, should stay in place. There is not much we can do to stop gun violence unless we start limiting the 2nd amendment even further, which I fully disagree with. |

| Even if it means at least 1000 less deaths, and 70 less school shootings a year? You love your gun, more than the lives and safety of others? |

Sorry, I don't feel responsible for the psychos that go and shoot up a school. |

| Gun owners are responsible, their kids bring the guns to school due to their lack of responsibility. |

@Jay
Don't lump me or other responsible gun owners with crazies that shoot up public buildings. I own an M 4, yeah, 2 30-round magazines as well. Do I have thoughts of wanting to kill a person or a group of people? No, and if I did I'd tell my parents to get me help and as far away from guns as possible. My fam ily owns that rifle because they're fun to shoot at a range, and can be used in case of a home invasion (but we already have a home defense firearm - a Taurus Judge) |

| Haven't actually measured since it's my dad's, but I think 6 inches, and it chambers both .45 rounds and .410 gauge shotgun shells. Fun as hell to shoot ^_^ |

No, your parents own an AR-15 and two standard capacity magazines.
Also Jayy I'm gonna need a citation on 70 school shooting every year from a reliable source which means not from Everytown.

Nope, way off, it's a 3-inch barrel lol
Yeah I know I don't own it, but it's simpler to say "I own it" as it saves 1 - 2 seconds of typing, and I'm sure you understand what I mean.... |

I was actually pointing out that you don't have a M4, you have an AR-15.

| Near the serial numbers Colt is marketing it as "M4" as that's what is stamped on it, so I'll refer to it as an "M4," but AR-15 doesn't bother me. |

| The problem with the crazies is they obtain their guns legally, which is why the background checks need a revamp. |
