| Then say it was a joke in the sentence it would be more efficient that way than saying it afterwards. |

It's not easier, it's just what you prefer.
Afrikaans uses accents more, but has a more consistent writing for the s, c and k. Dutch has less accents (and only apply them in loan-words or logical situations), but, in trade, has a less consistent writing for the s, c and k.
Pronounciation is pretty identical except the g and some words. Written, slight differences.
Spoken, South-African people will have a harder time understanding Dutch speakers as Dutch speakers speak faster overal (same with German -> Dutch and Latin American Spanish -> European Spanish), but in the reverse this effect doesn't occur often.
Afrikaans is generally more seen as a dialect of Dutch rather than a real, completely different language. Thus more like Dutch -> Frisian/Flemish than Dutch -> German.
Talking out of my own experiences and others'.
I don't know much about the grammar in Afrikaans, although overal it seems quite the same. People say that Dutch has a slight disadvantage in being more difficult in this field, but I can't confirm this. Also, being more difficult would prove more interesting due to being more challenging (and perhaps) fun the learn on the hand.
