Life can't exist without water, but water can exist without life.
Go figure.

"but water can exist without life."
OBJECTION
nothing on the planet is pointless, and as such i imagine if water were ever to become pointless it would suddenly cease to exist, because pointless things don't exist!
as such, water cannot exist without life!

arguing from an atheist perspective i imagine the purpose of the human race is to find purpose

Kotawl, this is my argument... Not yours.
Anyway, when you think about it, just like water would be pointless, absolutely Everything would be pointless as well.

no i disagree, humans could exist for 3 days without water
water could not exist for 3 days without humans

"water could not exist for 3 days without humans"
So it randomly disappears from existence?
...No, that's not how stuff works. Sure, it might vaporize into steam, but steam and water has the same atomic structure. So it's the same molecule.
To quote chapter 11 of Flunken's OT: The Merging, "No, things can't just vanish like that! It breaks the law of conservation of mass."

no what i'm saying is something that is utterly useless is impossible
it would just poof instantly
i mean so long as the thing can be used for something, no matter what, it's not useless/lacking in purpose
take rocks for an example

Really though, things can't randomly disappear.
Either they already exist, or they don't, but their state of existence doesn't change in mid-existence.
"i mean so long as the thing can be used for something, no matter what, it's not useless/lacking in purpose"
Everything has an effect on something in the universe one way or another, no matter what it is.
It's referred to as the butterfly effect.

exactly which is why if something ceased having a purpose it would probably just stop existing
"Really though, things can't randomly disappear."
we don't know how gravity works, yet it works
i don't see how if a certain object suddenly started violating the way our universe is supposed to work it wouldn't just disappear

"exactly which is why if something ceased having a purpose it would probably just stop existing"
Pretty much means that thing CAN'T stop existing as long as they have this extremely small effect on our universe.
"i don't see how if a certain object suddenly started violating the way our universe is supposed to work it wouldn't just disappear"
Things don't randomly break the rules of physics, either.

exactly but in this situation you're saying life can't exist without water and i'm saying water can't exist without life
if there were no water, life would still exist because it would have a point
the point of water is to provide sustenance for life (worded that badly but you get my point)
"Things don't randomly break the rules of physics, either."
keep in mind that the rules of physics get rewritten every now and then, they're not absolute

"exactly but in this situation you're saying life can't exist without water and i'm saying water can't exist without life"
Ok, let me rephrase that.
Life can't begin to exist without water.
Also, life isn't really an object... It's more of a concept.
"keep in mind that the rules of physics get rewritten every now and then"
We don't write the rules of physics, we only figure them out.
The rules of physics were written during the very beginning of the universe. By who? The universe itself, of course.
