| The pledge of allegiance was originally composed in 1892 by Francis Bellamy. The pledge was originally worded "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Students stood up and saluted the flag with a "Bellamy salute" [Google it]. Today the pledge is officially worded "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." One Nation under god was added during the red scare when Americans feared the spread of communist ideology. Atheism is a central idea of communism. Today if you don't stand up and recite the pledge every day the teacher berates (scolds) you in my school and you are looked at as unpatriotic. I contend that this nationalist practice which is similar to indoctrination tactics used in fascist totalitarian states like WWII Germany goes against our founding fathers original values for this nation. |

They can't punish you for not doing the pledge.
I usually just say something at the end like, in place of "Under God" I'll say Under AIIah, or Lucllfer, or it made by classmates laugh the most whenever I said Obama.

| They don't do anything like this in Great Britain. I am sure if a British citizen were to visit a school in America, they would find the practice incredibly strange, concerning even. |
