His father confronted him that night at dinner, asking all at the table to tell the truth on who cut down his new tree.
Then George, who was still very young, stood up and proclaimed "I cannot tell a lie.." and explained himself.
His father was impressed with his honesty and that is why he did not get punished, though he never did it again.
