| No, embrace the idea of 40 hours films my friend, and see the possibilities for story depth that lie there! |

| Some movies are low budget and can't really be long. |

It really depends on investment and use of time more than anything. For example, the Lord of the Things (you know what I mean...) trilogy kept me and most others invested throughout the full length of the films, which were all over 3 hours.
The Fellowship of the Ring - 178/200 minutes The Two Towers - 179/214 minutes The Return of the King - 201/240 minutes (4 hours, seriously?)
These are the normal and special edition times.
But something like King King (2005) could have easily been at least 30 minutes shorter (it is 201 minutes normally), if they left out most of the pointlessness on the boat. Although it was originally only supposed to be 135 minutes, so I'd like to know what prompted them to add so much.
By the way, the longest movie I can find that was in theater's was 1974's The Deluge, which clocks in at 316 minutes. |

@MummySprayer
Buy the Return of the King Extended Edition (251 minutes) "with new editing and added special effects and music, along with four commentaries and six hours of supplementary material, plus 10 minutes of fan-club credits." (Wiki page) |

| I think it depends on the movie, especially book/comic adaptations, sometimes I think they require that amount of time to fully tell the story. |

| I think a movie can be as long as it wants. If it can hold a viewer's attention past the 2 hour mark, it must have something going for it. |

| there are 40 hours films, but not many and they are so experimental that they are probably impossible to watch in one sitting. |

| As long as the audience remains hooked and questions what's next, then a movie can be any length, I think. |

| The longest movie of all time is over 240 hours long. It's a Danish experimental art film apparently. |
