Frank Lampard has agreed a free transfer to New York City - and Atletico Madrid marksman David Villa is set to join him.
The highly-decorated ex-Chelsea midfielder and the Spanish title-winning striker were at Manchester City's Carrington complex on Saturday to complete the internal formalities of their respective moves.
Lampard and Villa met with Jason Kreis, installed as New York City Head Coach back in January by the Premier League champions' Chief Executive Officer Ferran Soriano. Lampard broke off from his preparations with England for the World Cup to sort out his move.
Both deals are a huge statement of intent from City's US franchise which kicks off in the new Major League Soccer season next March. Lampard is understood to be have agreed to a basic wage significantly less than the £150,000-a-week that he picked up at Chelsea.

"Soccer will grow if the MLS gets rid of the salary cap"
No it won't, the league would fold in less than 5 years |

rampant spending and overexpansion followed by the relatively low cost of expansion fees
Every major city at one point had an NASL team. Each year about 5 folded and 5 cities got a new team. |

| the salary cap helps to develop north american players. if there was no salary cap, MLS would just become EPL 2.0 |

The homegrown player rule was also a fantastic idea in developing North American players

There's really nothing wrong with any of the formatting of MLS, and it's doing a terrific job. People that want to change it honestly know nothing about the league or it's structure. Don Garber is the best commissioner in the United States.
