it's just a bunch of kids throwing boogers at you through cyberspace
then again I know absolutely nothing and it's probably much more than this- but I think kids hurting themselves and committing like hara-kiri over it is kind of ludicrous but I dunno

| Depends, we've all probably heard about the Amanda Todd story, where people followed her around with the posts, but most of the time it's a five year old on CoD yelling about how good your mom felt last night. |

Believe it or not, people commit suicide because of this.
If people are dying, it is definetly an issue. |

| IMO there are different kinds of cyber-bullying. Somebody calling you 'stupid' on the internet is the ridiculous kind, people who you know IRL harassing you (not anonymously) on social media or VIA the phone is a bit more serious and personal, and somebody doing something unbelievably mean (IE: Revealing your information to thousands of people) is another serious kind. |

i agree
although if people repeatedly call you something, it can make you think that you are whatever it is they claim you are
just from my knowledge |

@Nick did you even read the thread- I'm aware of the fact that people are suiciding because of it, but I said that it doesn't seem like that much of an issue- it's pretty ridiculous imo to sucide over people insulting you over the internet
but as said in the thread I know nothing and I am probably wrong

@Flunken
The supposed ridiculousness of the situation does not make it more or less of an an issue. The point is that lives are being taken. |

@Song Well, I suppose if my secret was revealed online to thousands of people, I wouldn't be thrilled- but I sure as hell wouldn't suicide over it
But, that's just me. I guess other people might feel differently

It depends on the secret, does it not? It also depends on who's told, and how they treat you because of it. |

I hate to classify things, but that's how things like these are. Because cyberbullying isn't being called out for doing something rude or dumb or being called a nerd one time by a stranger on the internet, it's the constant harassment of someone by the same person or people.
Cyberbullying, thus, is a real and very serious thing, because sometimes words can cause more injury than physical pain itself. To be honest not everyone is so thick skinned and I don't blame people for being upset about being bullied on the internet. I get upset though when there is an overreaction to something small and insignificant because its putting a bad name to a good cause. |

@Song weelllll the secret is a "guilty pleasure" I have.. and let's say.. everybody at my school knows. I guess some people might be accepting, but i'd probably be tormented for a bit, but then everybody would forget about it and get caught up on the next story.
actually that's probably what the internet would do

I misunderstood the title. By serious I thought you meant a serious issue, instead of a serious attack. My apologies.
This, THIS is why we need the Grammar Police. |

| Okay, let's say it gets forgotten in 10 minutes. If 100,000 people see it, you'd feel like your life was ruined. It doesn't matter how many people saw it or for how long, it would still effect you in a negative way. |

@Cloud I wasn't joking about it. I don't see a single joke anywhere on this thread …
@Moon i mean i've been "cyberbullied" before and I wasn't happy about it but I wasn't like severely depressed either I guess, like what Song said, if somebody reveals your deepest secret in the whole world to the internet, then you have plenty reason to be upset.. but suiciding… just doesn't seem to be the answer.

The main reason why people feel differently is because you're behind a screen instead of facing that person in real life.
Sometimes when one guy goes up to and insults another guy, there's a chance that guy will retaliate through actions instead of words. However, on the internet that can't happen. The most you can do to retaliate is type a few words and click the button that posts them. It doesn't seem effective for the victim, but seems very effective for the bully. |

| Flunken, the difference is that the internet wouldn't stop. They'd keep going and going and going. Then, if you were to end it, they'd call you a baby and say it was your fault. |

@cloud lolno
If my secret were to be revealed, and everybody forgot about it in 10 minutes, i'd be very surprised at how fast it went away, and i'd continue my internet alias life

@Song I would just have to suck it up and deal with it then, even though I find it unlikely that the internet will forever harass me for my secret. But if that were to happen, I still wouldn't suicide..
@Supah I dunno, a good insult to retaliate against a ok insult.. if I were to do that i'd feel pretty good
