I have a lot to say about many of the issues currently on the ROBLOX site, but let me start by saying it has finally happened.
For over three years on the forums I have often warned in debates and rants with other people that the true death of this site will be when ROBLOX users are able to exploit this skewed player-based economy for real, personal gain. And now, that opportunity is becoming available for thousands of children who originally joined this site to participate in an online community focused around playing and building games. I have realized now that the admins have swayed too far from this objective.
I haven't complained about many of the site's updates in the past. I stuck it out through the Zeke & Luther and Level Up partnerships with children's television networks, bit my tongue when BC updates where churned out time and again, and only cried for twenty minutes when Limited trading was released. (I'm lying.) The problem that I was seeing is that it was becoming harder and harder to use ROBLOX for its true purpose - to be used as a virtual toy.
The tipping point is the newly announced Developer's Exchange that plans to reward users for their virtual currency accumulations. This is, simply put, an easily abuse-able system. While it won't specifically affect me, it is guaranteed to further make ROBLOX a ROBUX-raising pell-mell race. In fact, no one would be playing for hats anymore; now it is actually for keeps. I think parents would have a problem with this system, too, especially when the DevEx could be induced upon younger players who are in no position to manage a Paypal account. It is wasted opportunity reserved only for older players. Coupled with the fact that the only real benefits gained from this system will be picked up by builders who are able to make multiple, quality places, the casual user player is on the losing end of the spectrum n-times over.
From a long-term standpoint of a you-vs.-everyone else scenario, more episodes of backstabbing and throat-ripping are bound to happen from the DevEx. Users have been stealing places from each other for years. We have all worried about JaredValdez and all of the problems he would generate if he was earning anything other than hat money. This update will imminently spawn a staggering amount of copycats. I promise it.
I understand that ROBLOX is trying to support developers who use their platform for incredible things. However, that level of pampering is one that I cannot ignore. I don't possess skills like TheGamer101 or alexnewtron, but productiveness doesn't have to be compensated all the time. It is really only the players who have used ROBLOX to its full potential by creating content that the administrators have showed off to draw in more crowds. I know that the builders deserve credit, but that should only come from the satisfaction of having other players enjoy it. Unfortunately this is no longer possible.
I have played as a member of this site for over four years doing everything entirely for non-profit. It was all for entertainment and for discovering what I really wanted to do with myself for a career. There is no point in doing anything constructive if it is all overshadowed by the growing competition to outshine other users.
Thus, this is the end of the road for me. I'm packing my things and going just like I always swore I would. I will not pursue the BLOXY awards next year, write another ROBLOX fanfiction, run another comic series, or twiddle my thumbs watching the condition of this site deteriorate even more. Though I am not quitting specifically over the recent updates, I have been thinking about leaving behind ROBLOX for a long time - now I have to grow up.
I extend my thanks to the many individuals who have been supporting the work that I've done. I feel like I'm cheating out a ton of people by doing this on my own accord, but, their thoughts aren't my own. Everything I learned during my time on this site helped me discover who I am. I am appreciative to everyone who helped get me to this point; even the developers. ROBLOX was ultimately not a waste of my resources after all.
Send me off with a smile, folks. I quit. Heil Rarity, think in the Noosphere, and give yourself up to the Clutches. I am done.

Just because you play Roblox, doesn't mean you haven't 'Grown Up'.

You know, I don't normally forum here, and as such I don't know who you are.
But I can relate to similar experiences in feelings throughout my time on ROBLOX. I wish you farewell, and have you a good rest of your life. |

You're one of the people I'll truly, honestly miss. I've known you practically all the way back to when I joined, and to be honest, you've always sort of inspired me on this site, and it's sad to see you go after all this time. You're one of the last remaining friends I've known since my beginning on this site, and it truly makes me sad to see you leaving this site.
At least I have you added on steam though. I'll talk to you there soon.
remember, rt is the future, and the future starts with you |
